Hofstra's Galton Headlines All-CAA Women's Soccer Team
Rob Washburn
RICHMOND, Va. (November 5, 2014) – Hofstra junior forward
Leah Galton was chosen as the Colonial Athletic Association women’s soccer Player of the Year for the second consecutive season in voting by the league’s head coaches.
Northeastern, the CAA regular-season champion, swept the other top women’s soccer honors as senior defender
Bianca Calderone was named Defender of the Year, freshman midfielder
Hannah Lopiccolo was chosen as Rookie of the Year and
Tracey Leone was selected as the Coach of the Year.
Galton becomes just the fifth player in CAA history to earn multiple Player of the Year honors. The junior leads the CAA and ranks ninth in Division I with a career-high 16 goals and she also tops the conference with 36 points, which ranks 13
th nationally. She was especially strong down the stretch with nine goals and two assists over Hofstra’s final five games, including back-to-back hat tricks against Delaware and Towson. The 16 goals are tied for the third-most in program history and she’s two away from the single-season record of 18 set by teammate Sam Scolarici a year ago. Galton, who was the 2012 CAA Rookie of the Year and the 2013 CAA Player of the Year, is already second on Hofstra’s career points list with 90.
Calderone anchored a Northeastern defense that was among the best in the nation this season. The Huskies allowed just six goals in 19 matches this season, which is tied for the second-fewest in Division I, and their 14 shutouts are tied for the third-most in the country. The senior also contributed offensively for the Huskies with two goals and four assists. The assists all came in CAA play. Calderone is the first Northeastern player to receive CAA Defender of the Year accolades.
Lopiccolo led Northeastern and ranked among the top 10 in the CAA in goals (5), assists (4) and points (14) despite playing in the midfield. The freshman scored a pair of goals in her first collegiate game against UMass Lowell and tallied a career-high five points in a CAA victory over Elon with two goals and an assist. She also recorded the game-tying goal in the 86
th minute of a critical 2-2 tie against Delaware on Oct. 24. Lopiccolo is the fourth Northeastern player to be named CAA Rookie of the Year, but first since Devin Petta in 2009.
Leone guided Northeastern to its first CAA regular-season title since 2009 with a 7-1-1 mark in league play. The Huskies were among the top defensive teams in the nation this season with a school-record 14 shutouts in 19 contests, including seven in nine conference games. Offensively, the Huskies’ 18 goals in CAA play were the second-most in the conference. Northeastern has an overall mark of 12-4-3, which is the most wins for the Huskies since 2009 and is just shy of the school record of 13. The CAA Coach of the Year honor is the first for Leone.
Six schools had at least one player selected to the All-CAA first team. Joining Galton from Hofstra was senior forward
Sam Scolarici, who ranks second in the CAA with 15 goals, and junior midfielder
Jeannine Molleda (2g, 4a). Northeastern also had three players on the first team with Calderone and Lopiccolo joined by senior goalkeeper
Paige Burnett, who led the CAA and ranked among national leaders in GAA (0.30), save percentage (.850) and shutouts (13).
James Madison was represented by sophomore forward
Ashley Herndon (4g, 8a) and senior defender
Sam Lofton (3g, 7a). Delaware senior defender
Allegra Gray and Drexel senior defender
Melissa Chapman (5g) both made the first team for the third year in a row. Towson senior midfielder
Katie Ponce (6g, 1a) moved up to the first team in 2014 after earning second-team All-CAA honors last season.
