CAA MEN'S BASKETBALL WEEKLY REPORT - JAN. 12 (PDF format)
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Freddie Jackson • UNCW
Sr., G, 6-4, 185 - Wilmington, N.C./New Hanover
Jackson averaged 19.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists in UNCW’s 3-0 week. The senior guard scored 18 points in a road victory at preseason favorite Northeastern, tallied a team-high 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists in an overtime win against Delaware and had a team-best 19 points in a triumph over Drexel. For the week, Jackson shot 55.5% from the floor as the Seahawks won three straight CAA games for the first time since 2011-12.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Terry Tarpey • William & Mary
Jr., G/F, 6-5, 210 - Stamford, Conn./Fairfield Prep
Tarpey averaged 16.3 points, 11.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists as William & Mary went 2-1 last week. The junior set career-highs with 22 points and 13 rebounds at Elon before recording the first triple-double in Tribe program history with 18 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists in an 81-73 victory over JMU on Saturday. Tarpey shot 58.1% from the floor and 83.3% from the free throw line last week.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Kory Holden • Delaware
Fr., G, 6-2, 180 - Salisbury, Md./J.M. Bennett
Holden averaged 16.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in Delaware’s three road games last week. The freshman guard scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds at UNCW, contributed 14 points in a road victory at College of Charleston and tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists at Hofstra.
CONFERENCE NOTES:
HOFSTRA SITS ATOP CAA STANDINGS: Following a 3-0 week, Hofstra is the only remaining unbeaten team in CAA play with a 4-0 mark. The 4-0 record is the Pride’s best since also opening 4-0 in 2010-11. Hofstra is on a six-game winning streak, which is its longest since 2010, and the Pride’s 13-4 overall record matches the program’s best-ever 17-game record at the Division I level (tied with 1982-83, 2000-01 and 2005-06). Sitting one-game back at 3-1 are UNCW, Northeastern and William & Mary. The Seahawks, who have won three straight, are 3-1 in the CAA for the first time since 2011-12. The Huskies have already equaled their overall win total (11) from all last year. The Tribe is 3-1 in the CAA for the first time since 2009-10. The four teams are involved in head-to-head matchups on Wednesday night as Northeastern hosts Hofstra and William & Mary entertains UNCW.
ROAD TEAMS GO 12-8 IN CAA PLAY: Road teams have gone 3-2 during all four days of CAA play thus far and are a combined 12-8 for the season. Hofstra and Northeastern are both 3-0 on the road in league play, and eight of the 10 teams have won at least one conference road contest. Last season, home teams went 44-28 (61.1%) in CAA play.
HOFSTRA, NORTHEASTERN AMONG BEST ON ROAD: Hofstra leads all Division I schools with seven road wins (7-3) this season. Northeastern is tied for second with six road victories (6-3), along with Murray State (6-1), Eastern Kentucky (6-3) and Buffalo (6-4).
TARPEY RECORDS TRIBE’S FIRST TRIPLE-DOUBLE: Junior guard/forward Terry Tarpey recorded the first triple-double in the 110-year history of William & Mary basketball last Saturday when he had 18 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists in a win over James Madison. It was just the seventh triple-double posted by a Division I player this season, but the second in the CAA. Hofstra junior guard Juan’ya Green turned in the first triple-double in Pride program history on Dec. 28 when he had 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a victory over LIU Brooklyn.
YOUTH MOVEMENT: There are only six seniors among the CAA’s top 30 in scoring, six seniors among the league’s top 20 in rebounding and four seniors among the top 15 in assists. Through games of Jan. 12, there were 12 juniors, nine sophomores and three freshmen on the list of top 30 scorers, while there were nine juniors, four sophomores and one freshman on the list of top 20 rebounders.
CLIMBING THE 3-POINT LISTS: Three CAA players are climbing the career three-point lists at their respective schools. Delaware senior guard Kyle Anderson became the Blue Hens’ all-time three-pointer leader (238) on Jan. 5, passing Mike Ames (228). William & Mary senior guard Marcus Thornton has made 271 career treys, which ranks second in Tribe history behind only David Schneider (278). Elon junior guard Tanner Samson ranks sixth on the Phoenix’s all-time chart with 195 treys and needs five more to pass Chris Chalko for fifth place.
W&M’S THORNTON ON NATIONAL TOP 10 LISTS: William & Mary senior guard Marcus Thornton ranks fourth among active Division I players in career 3-pointers made (271) and he’s seventh in career scoring (1,816 points). The CAA preseason Player of the Year ranks second in the CAA in scoring (19.8 ppg) this season and has hit 48 treys. He also ranks fourth on W&M’s all-time scoring list.
GREEN GETS TO THE LINE: Hofstra junior guard Juan’ya Green has made 122 free throws this season, which is the most of any player in Division I. Maryland’s Melo Trimble is second with 117. Green also ranks second in free throws attempted (146), trailing only Gardner-Webb’s Jerome Hill (156). He’s shooting an impressive 83.6% from the charity stripe.
MCGLYNN RANKS 3RD NATIONALLY IN FT PERCENTAGE: Towson junior guard Four McGlynn is an incredible 71-of-76 (93.4%) at the charity stripe, which currently ranks third in the nation. Last season, McGlynn led the CAA and ranked sixth nationally in free throw percentage at 91.3%.
THREE CAA PLAYERS AMONG TOP 31 IN SCORING: Three CAA players are among the nation’s top 31 in scoring through games of Jan. 11. Drexel junior guard Damion Lee is ranked eighth with 20.8 ppg. He had a team-high 32 points at UNCW last Saturday, which was his seventh 20+-point effort of the season. W&M’s Marcus Thornton topped the 20-point mark in all three games last week and is 19th in scoring (19.8 ppg) and Hofstra’s Ameen Tanksley is 31st (18.1 ppg) after pouring in 25 points at Elon last Saturday.
3-POINT THREATS: The CAA features several of the nation’s top three-point threats this season. Elon junior Tanner Samson is 10th in 3-pointers per game (3.29). W&M senior Marcus Thornton is 11th in 3’s per game (3.2) and 12th in 3-pt percentage (46.6%). Hofstra junior Ameen Tanksley ranks 6th in 3-point percentage (48.5%), while Pride sophomore Brian Bernardi is 17th in 3’s per game (3.12) and 9th in 3-pt percentage (47.3%).
