CAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - WEEKLY REPORT (JAN. 26)

RICHMOND, Va. (January 26, 2015) – UNCW sophomore Brie Mobley was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week while Elon University’s Shay Burnett was named the CAA Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.

Guard Brie Mobley averaged 17.5 points per game in her first two starts of the season to help the Seahawks to a 2-0 week. The sophomore also averaged 3.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. In UNCW’s victory over Elon, Mobley tallied 15 points. She followed that up with a season-high 20 points on 10-for-19 shooting in the come-from-behind victory over Towson.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:

Guard Shay Burnett averaged 14.0 points and 5.0 rebounds over two games for Elon. The freshman went 4-for-8 from long distance and hit 8-of-11 chances from the line during the week. Against UNCW, Burnett made the most of her 14 minutes of action, tallying seven points and three rebounds. In the Phoenix’s overtime win against Northeastern, Burnett posted a career-high 21 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. It is the second time this season in which Burnett has been named the Rookie of the Week.
 

#CAAHoops – The Week that Was

College of Charleston (4-15; 2-6 CAA): The Cougars had a pair of tough losses to at Delaware and at home against James Madison last week. Bre Bolden and Jackie Luna-Castro each averaged 13.0 points and 4.5 rebounds on the week. Bolden added seven steals to remain in the top-10 nationally in the defensive category.
 
Delaware (8-11; 3-5 CAA): The Blue Hens split games last week, topping College of Charleston before falling at Drexel. Delaware had five players – Erika Brown (19), Courtni Green (13), Hannah Jardine (13), Joy Caracciolo (12) and Makeda Nicholas (10) – score in double figures in Thursday’s win over Charleston, the first time since the 2005 season.
 
Drexel (12-7; 6-2 CAA): Drexel navigated one of the toughest stretches of its schedule, winning at Hofstra and against Delaware to move into sole possession of second place in the league standings. The Dragons have now won four of their last five despite playing three straight on the road. Sarah Curran averaged 14.0 points behind 57.1 percent shooting and 5.5 rebounds per game. Rookie Kelsi Lidge added 5.5 points per game.

Elon (12-7; 5-3 CAA): The Phoenix split a pair of games last week. Despite a season-high 11 three-pointer, Elon was edged by UNCW. The Phoenix bounced back with an 80-77 overtime win against Northeastern, hitting the 80-point mark for the second time this season. Rookie Shay Burnett averaged 14.0 points and 5.0 rebounds to pace Elon.
 
Hofstra (12-7; 5-3 CAA): The Pride suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season, falling to Drexel and William & Mary last week. Junior Elo Edeferioka averaged a double-double with 14.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game on the week while shooting 61.9 percent from the field.

James Madison (17-2; 8-0 CAA): The Dukes went 2-0 this week to remain perfect in CAA play after topping William & Mary and College of Charleston. JMU has won 19 straight games at home, tied for fourth longest streak in nation. The Dukes have won 26 of their last 27 meetings with CAA foes, including the postseason. Lauren Okafor averaged 17.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks per game while Precious Hall turned in back-to-back 20-point efforts.
 
UNCW (8-11; 4-4 CAA): The Seahawks returned home to earn a pair of victories over Elon and Towson, erasing a 13-point deficit to defeat the Tigers. With their two wins last week, the Seahawks have already surpassed their conference win total from each of the last two seasons. Kelva Atkins had 35 points to move into tenth place on the Seahawks’ all-time scoring list (1,171).
 
Northeastern (4-14; 1-7 CAA): The Huskies suffered a pair of tough losses, falling to Towson and Elon in overtime. Samantha DeFreese averaged 20.0 points and 8.5 rebounds on the week. Against Elon, DeFreese had a career-high 26 points, scoring 13 points in the final 14 minutes to help the Huskies come back to force overtime. Rookie Maureen Taggert added 7.5 points per game last week.
 
Towson (8-12; 4-4 CAA): Towson went 1-1 last week, defeating Northeastern before falling to UNCW. The Tigers hit a school record 12 three-pointers in the win over Northeastern. Senior guard Ciara Webb led the Tigers on the week as she averaged 18.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in the two contests while LaTorri Hines-Allen averaged 15.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game and became the fourth player in the CAA this season to record her 1,000th career point.
 
William & Mary (8-11; 2-6 CAA): The Tribe went 1-1 on the week, falling at JMU before edging Hofstra, 57-56, thanks to a last second block by rookie Abby Rendle. With the win, William & Mary picked up its eighth victory of the season, which ties them with the win total from the last two years. Senior Jazmen Boone averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds with five assists and six steals on the week.
