CAA MEN'S BASKETBALL WEEKLY REPORT - NOV. 23 (PDF format)
CAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week: Canyon Barry, Jr., G, College of Charleston – Barry averaged 26.5 points and 4.5 rebounds as College of Charleston split a pair of road games. The junior guard tallied a career-high 31 points for the second time in three games this season and grabbed six rebounds in a narrow 82-81 setback at Davidson. He also poured in a team-high 22 points as the Cougars topped Navy 72-58. Barry currently tops the CAA and ranks third nationally in scoring with 28.0 ppg.
CAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week: Juan’ya Green, Sr., G, Hofstra – Green averaged 20.7 points and 7.3 assists in Hofstra’s 2-1 week. The senior guard contributed 17 points, 7 assists and 3 steals in the Pride’s 82-77 upset of ACC foe Florida State in the first round of the Paradise Jam. He followed with a season-high 28 points and seven assists in a 94-84 setback to SEC opponent South Carolina in the semifinals. Green, who has scored double figures in 38 straight games, is averaging 19.5 ppg and 8.3 apg for the season.
CAA Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week: Dainan Swoope, Fr., G, Elon – Swoope scored double figures in all three games and averaged 12.7 points per contest in Elon’s 1-2 week. The freshman guard came off the bench to tally a team-best 15 points in a loss at #24 Michigan and was also Elon’s top scorer with 12 points in 66-55 setback at Syracuse. Swoope, who leads the Phoenix with 12 treys this season, netted 11 points in a victory over Belmont Abbey.
CONFERENCE NOTES:
HOFSTRA KNOCKS OFF FLORIDA STATE: The CAA picked up its second win over an ACC opponent this season as Hofstra knocked off Florida State 82-77 last Friday in the opening round of the Paradise Jam. Junior Brian Bernardi hit 6-of-8 three-pointers and scored 19 of his team-high 24 points in the first half to lead the Pride. Hofstra fell 94-84 to South Carolina in the semifinals of the tournament despite making a school-record 17 treys and getting a season-best 28 points from Juan’ya Green. The Pride faces Indiana State tonight in the third-place game, which will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
STRONG START CONTINUES: The CAA has performed well in non-conference play with the league’s 10 teams combining for a 22-16 overall record. Unbeaten UNCW (3-0) is off to its best start since 2005-06, Hofstra opened 3-0 for the first time since 2004-05, Northeastern began 4-0 for the second year in a row and William & Mary started 3-0, highlighted by a season-opening road victory at N.C. State, before a close loss at A-10 favorite Dayton. Six of the CAA’s 16 losses have come to teams from the Power 5 conferences and the league has posted its winning record despite playing less than 40% of its games at home.
OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS: There were numerous outstanding individual efforts turned in by CAA players again last week. College of Charleston junior Canyon Barry scored a career-high 31 points for the second time this season in a one-point road loss at Davidson. Northeastern senior David Walker poured in a career-best 30 points with six assists in a win over Lipscomb last Saturday. It was the most points by an NU player since 2007. Towson sophomore Byron Hawkins nailed 7-of-10 threes and scored a career-best 28 points against Ole Miss and followed with a team-best 24 points in a victory against Bradley at the Charleston Classic. Hofstra senior Juan’ya Green posted a season-high 28 points and seven assists against South Carolina. UNCW senior Craig Ponder dropped in a team-best 24 points in a victory vs. Eastern Kentucky. Northeastern senior Quincy Ford posted a double-double with 18 points and a career-high 19 points against Lipscomb. It was the most rebounds by an NU player since 1990. William & Mary junior Daniel Dixon canned 6-of-10 threes and tallied 24 points in a close setback at Dayton.
BOMBS AWAY: Seven of the 10 teams in the CAA are averaging at least 7.0 three-pointers made per game. Hofstra leads the way and ranks 9th nationally with 11.3 per game, followed by Elon (9.0 pg), James Madison (9.0 pg), College of Charleston (8.7 pg) and UNCW (7.7 pg).
UNCW LEADS NATION IN TURNOVER MARGIN: UNCW leads the nation in turnover margin (+10.3 tpg) through games of Nov. 22. The Seahawks are forcing 22.0 turnovers per game while committing 11.7.
COFC’S BARRY RANKS SECOND IN SCORING: College of Charleston junior guard Canyon Barry ranks second in the nation in scoring with 28.0 ppg through games of Nov. 22. Hofstra junior guard Brian Bernardi is 5th nationally in 3-pointers per game (4.5), 7th in 3-point FG percentage (66.7%) and 21st in overall FG percentage (68.6%). Hofstra senior Juan’ya Green is seventh nationally in assists (8.3 apg), UNCW junior Chuck Ogbodo is 12th in blocked shots (3.3 bpg) and W&M senior Terry Tarpey is 16th in steals (3.25 spg).
College of Charleston
• Split a pair of road games, beating Navy (72-58) but falling at Davison (82-81).
• Junior Canyon Barry scored a career-high 31 points for the second time this season at Davidson. He also had a team-best 22 points at Navy. Barry tops the CAA and ranks 3rd nationally in scoring (28.0 ppg). He’s also 21-of-23 at the free throw line.
• Sophomore Cameron Johnson tallied 13 points at Davidson and 11 points and 6 rebounds at Navy. He’s reached double digits in all three games and is 7-of-14 from 3-point range this season.
• Freshman Marquise Pointer came off the bench to hit 3-of-6 treys and finished with a career-high 11 points at Navy.
• CofC has out-rebounded all three opponents this season and leads the CAA in rebound margin (+10.0 rpg).
• Sophomore Evan Bailey came off the bench to score 12 points at Navy, which was one point shy of his career high.
Delaware
• Had all five players starters score double figures, but lost 92-77 at Iona on Friday.
• Senior forward Marvin King-Davis, who posted a double-double (13pts/12reb) in the opener at DSU, followed with a team-high 16 points at Iona.
• Guard Chivarsky Corbett hit 3-of-6 treys and tallied 15 points and 5 rebounds at Iona. It was his 2nd straight game in double digits.
• Devonne Pinkard also posted a second consecutive double-figure effort with 15 points at Iona.
• Sophomore Skye Johnson made his first career start at Iona and scored 10 points. He had 23 career points entering the game.
• The Blue Hens played without a pair of starters at Iona - guard Cazmon Hayes (foot) and forward Maurice Jeffers (shoulder).
• The Blue Hens outrebounded DSU 44-29 in their opener and beat Iona 32-27 on the glass. UD is +10.0 rpg in rebound margin.
Drexel
• Dropped home games to High Point (75-66) and Monmouth (82-74) last week.
• Senior Tavon Allen hit 6-of-8 threes and scored a team-high 21 points against HPU and had 10 points and 5 assists vs. MU. He’s reached double figures in 5 straight games.
• Forward Kazembe Abif posted his third career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds vs MU and had 10 points and eight boards against HPU.
• Sophomore Rashann London nailed five threes and finished with a career-high 20 points against Monmouth. He’s scored double digits in all three games.
• Freshman guard Terrell Allen contributed 11 points and four assists against High Point and 10 points and 5 assists vs. Monmouth.
• Junior forward Rodney Williams scored a season-high 16 points on 6-of-10 FG shooting and grabbed seven rebounds vs. MU.
• Sophomore Major Canady, who missed last year due to injury, will also miss this season after suffering a knee injury.
Elon
• Went 1-2 last week, defeating Belmont Abbey (84-57) but losing road games to #24 Michigan (88-68) and Syracuse (66-55).
• Dmitri Thompson has scored double figures in all four games after tallying 10 points and 8 rebounds at Syracuse and 10 points vs. Belmont Abbey.
• Senior Tanner Samson averaged 11.3 ppg last week, but had his 9-game double-digit scoring streak ended at SU (6 pts). He’s 12 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
• Freshman guard Dainan Swoope averaged 12.7 ppg last week, including team-highs of 15 points at Michigan and 12 at Syracuse. He leads the Phoenix with 12 3-pointers.
• Freshman Tyler Seibring posted his first double-double vs. Belmont Abbey with 12 points and a team-best 10 rebounds.
• Freshman Steven Santa Ana had 17 points in only 16 minutes vs. Belmont Abbey.
• Elon has made 36 threes over the first four games.
Hofstra
• Upset Florida State (82-77) to start 3-0 for the first time since 2004-05, but lost 94-84 to South Carolina in the Paradise Jam semis.
• Juan’ya Green scored a season-high 28 points with 7 assists vs. USC and had 17 points, 7 assists and 3 steals vs. FSU. He’s tallied double figures in 38 straight games and is averaging 19.5 ppg and 8.3 apg.
• Junior Brian Bernardi scored a team-high 24 points vs. FSU and followed with 14 points vs. USC. He was 10-of-14 from 3 in the two games and leads the CAA in treys (18) and 3-point FG% (66.7%) for the season.
• Rokas Gustys has posted two double-doubles this season and had 8 points and 11 boards in the FSU win. He leads the CAA in rebounding with 10.8 rpg.
• Hofstra drained a school-record 17 threes on 34 attempts (50%) against USC.
• Senior Ameen Tanksley added 18 points against USC and 14 vs. FSU. He’s scored double digits in all four games this season.
James Madison
• Dropped 3-of-4 last week, beating FIU (64-61) but losing to #22 West Virginia, Oral Roberts and UT Martin.
• Senior Ron Curry has 9 straight double-digit games after scoring a team-best 21 points vs. UTM, 12 points vs. FIU, 16 points vs. ORU and 11 points at WVU. He’s averaging a team-high 15.8 ppg for the season.
• Junior Dimitrije Cabarkapa averaged 10.8 ppg last week, including a career-high 13 points off the bench vs. WVU. He also averaged 4.3 rebounds per contest.
• Junior Yohanny Dalembert had a team-best 17 points on 7-of-10 FG shooting and 6 rebounds vs. ORU in his second game back from a knee injury.
• Junior Shakir Brown had a team-high 21 points and 7 boards vs. WVU and posted his second double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds against FIU.
• Point guard Joey McLean scored 9 points on 4-of-4 FG shooting in the loss to ORU.
UNCW
• Improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2005-06 after home victories over Eastern Kentucky (78-59) and Western Michigan (80-76) last week.
• Junior transfer Chris Flemmings made four treys and scored a game-high 19 points in the victory over WMU.
• Senior guard Craig Ponder tallied a team-best 24 points vs. EKU and had 9 points vs. WMU. He’s shooting 60.6% from the floor, including 8-of-13 from three, this season.
• Senior Dylan Sherwood matched his career high with 16 points and also grabbed nine rebounds in the EKU victory.
• Charlotte transfer Denzel Ingram contributed 15 points and four assists in his UNCW debut against EKU and followed with 12 points against Western Michigan.
• Junior forward Chuck Ogbodo leads the CAA with 10 blocked shots this season and is also averaging 6.0 rebounds per game.
Northeastern
• Posted victories over Wentworth (91-62) FAU (60-58) and Lipscomb (79-67) before losing 67-61 at Miami-Ohio last week.
• Senior David Walker averaged 23.3 ppg at the MABC with a career-high 30 points vs. Lipscomb, 21 points vs. Miami and 19 points vs. FAU, including a game-winning dunk in the final seconds. The 30 points were the most by an NU player since 2007.
• Senior Quincy Ford posted a double-double with 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds vs. LU. It was the most boards by an NU player since 1990. Over 3 games at the MABC, he averaged 16.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg.
• Senior Zach Stahl recorded a double-double vs. FAU with a career-high 20 points and a team-best 11 rebounds, and followed with 15 points in the Lipscomb win. Stahl averaged 15.7 ppg and 7.7 rpg at the MABC.
• Junior Jimmy Marshall scored a career-high 14 points in the first half vs. Wentworth and grabbed a career-high 8 rebounds vs. FAU.
Towson
• Split four games last week, beating Morgan State (69-61) and Bradley (62-60), but falling to Oklahoma State (69-52) and Ole Miss (76-60).
• Guard Byron Hawkins hit 7-of-10 threes and scored a career-high 28 points vs. Ole Miss and followed with a team-best 24 points in the Bradley win. He’s tallied double digits in 4-of-5 games and is averaging 17.0 ppg.
• Junior Arnaud William Adala Moto posted a team-high 14 points and 7 boards vs. OSU. The Wake Forest transfer is averaging 12.2 ppg and a team-best 6.8 rpg for the season.
• Junior John Davis scored a team-high 16 points vs. Morgan State and netted 14 points in his first start against Bradley.
• Sophomore Mike Morsell scored 11 points and added six rebounds vs. Oklahoma State. He also chipped in nine points vs. Ole Miss.
• Senior Timajh Parker-Rivera is averaging 6.4 rebounds per game and has blocked a team-high seven shots.
William & Mary
• Went 2-1 last week, beating Liberty (70-59) and Washington Adventist (85-60) before losing a close 69-66 decision at Dayton.
• Daniel Dixon went 6-of-10 from three and scored a team-high 24 points at Dayton. He’s hit 13 treys over the first four games.
• Terry Tarpey contributed 8 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists at Dayton. He has made a league-high 13 steals over 4 games.
• Junior Omar Prewitt averaged 16.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 3.3 apg last week, including a team-best 16 points at Liberty.
• Senior Sean Sheldon scored 12 points at LU, 14 points against WAC and 12 points on 5-for-5 FG shooting at Dayton. He’s shooting 73.1% from the floor for the season.
• W&M shot a season-low 41.8% from the floor at Dayton, but made 10-of-22 (45.5%) from 3-point range.
• Greg Malinowski chipped in nine points off the bench at Liberty and had six points and six rebounds at Dayton.
