CAA MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Quincy Ford • Northeastern
Sr., F/G, 6-8, 225 - St. Petersburg, Fla./Gibbs
Ford scored a season-high 24 points, including a game-winning jumper at the buzzer, as Northeastern upset 15th-ranked Miami (Fla.) 78-77 last Friday. The senior forward was 9-of-17 from the floor, made 5-of-10 from 3-point range, and also contributed six rebounds and four steals. It was the Huskies’ first victory over a nationally ranked opponent since 1986. Ford has scored double figures in all six games this season and is averaging 15.8 ppg and 6.5 rpg.
CAA MEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
C.J. Bryce • UNCW
Fr., G, 6-5, 180 - Charlotte, N.C./North Mecklenburg
Bryce scored a career-high 14 points and grabbed a career-best six rebounds in UNCW’s commanding 94-73 road win at East Tennessee State last Saturday. The freshman guard was 6-of-7 from the floor at ETSU and also contributed three assists and three steals. He’s averaging 7.5 ppg and 3.8 rpg for a UNCW team that is off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 1995.
CONFERENCE NOTES:
NORTHEASTERN UPSETS #15 MIAMI: The CAA picked up its third win over an ACC opponent this season as Northeastern upset #15 Miami (Fla.), 78-77, last Friday. Senior Quincy Ford, who finished with a team-high 24 points, hit the game-winning jumper at the buzzer as the Huskies defeated a nationally ranked opponent for the first time since 1986. Senior David Walker added 21 points, which was his third straight 20-point outing. Earlier this season, William & Mary defeated N.C. State, 85-68, on Nov. 13 and Hofstra knocked off Florida State, 82-77, on Nov. 20.
STRONG START CONTINUES: The CAA has performed well in non-conference play with the league’s 10 teams combining for a 33-24 overall record. Unbeaten UNCW (4-0) is off to its best start since 1995, while Northeastern opened the season 5-1 for the second year in a row and received a vote in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll. Seven teams currently have winning records in non-conference play.
NORTHEASTERN’S FORD EARNS NATIONAL HONORS: Along with his CAA Player of the Week award, Northeastern senior Quincy Ford was recognized by two other media outlets for his 24-point performance in the Huskies’ victory at Miami. He was named the Lou Henson Award National Player of the Week by College Insider and the College Sports Madness High-Major National Player of the Week.
OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL EFFORTS: There were numerous outstanding individual efforts turned in by CAA players again last week. JMU’s Shakir Brown (25 points/14 rebounds) and Yohanny Dalembert (23 points/15 rebounds) became the first Dukes’ duo to post double-doubles in the same game since 2011 in a win at Marshall, while William & Mary’s Terry Tarpey (13 points/17 rebounds) and Omar Prewitt (22 points/10 rebounds) became the first Tribe pair with double-doubles in the same game since 2004 in a victory over Hampton. Towson guard Byron Hawkins scored 20 points in an overtime win at Coppin State, which was his third 20-point outing in the past four games. Delaware forward Marvin King-Davis recorded double-doubles against Fairleigh Dickinson (14 points/10 rebounds) and Temple (13 points/10 rebounds) and now has three in the Blue Hens’ first four contests. Hofstra guard Juan’ya Green just missed his second double-double with 23 points and nine assists in a road win at St. Bonaventure.
ELON’S SAMSON CLOSES IN ON 3-POINT RECORD: Elon senior guard Tanner Samson is closing in on the school’s career record for three-pointers. Samson currently ranks third with 254 treys and trails only Chris Kiger (259) and Jack Isenbarger (264) on the all-time list. Last season, Samson drained a school-record 103 three-pointers, which was the third-highest total in CAA history.
MILESTONE VICTORIES: Northeastern coach Bill Coen earned his 150th career victory when the Huskies topped Miami last Friday. Hofstra coach Joe Mihalich picked up his 299th win by beating St. Bonaventure last Saturday and can reach the 300-win mark by defeating his alma mater, La Salle, on Wednesday.
BOMBS AWAY: Seven of the 10 teams in the CAA are averaging at least 7.5 three-pointers made per game. James Madison leads the way with 9.9 treys per game, followed by Hofstra (9.7 pg), Elon (8.7 pg), William & Mary (8.3 pg), College of Charleston (8.0 pg) and Northeastern (7.8 pg) and UNCW (7.5 pg).
CLEANING THE GLASS: All 10 CAA teams are out-rebounding their opponents for the season as of Nov. 30. Delaware has a league-best +9.0 rebound margin, followed by Towson (+7.9 rpg), College of Charleston (+4.4 rpg) and Northeastern (+4.3 rpg).
UNCW LEADS NATION IN TURNOVER MARGIN: UNCW leads the nation in turnover margin (+9.8 tpg) through games of Nov. 29. The Seahawks are forcing 21.8 turnovers per game while committing 12.0.
College of Charleston
• Edged Western Carolina 57-56 after falling 67-61 to Coastal Carolina last week.
• Freshman Jarrell Brantley posted his first double-double with a career-high 17 points and seven rebounds in WCU win. He also had three blocks and three steals. Brantley tops all CAA freshmen with 6.0 rpg.
• Sophomore Cameron Johnson made four treys and scored a career-high 20 points vs. CCU. He’s reached double digits in four of five games and is averaging 13.2 ppg.
• Junior Canyon Barry chipped in 13 points vs. WCU. Barry scored 31 points in two of CofC’s first three games and is averaging a CAA-best 21.0 ppg. He’s also 22-of-25 at the free throw line this season.
• Freshman Marquise Pointer came off the bench to contribute 12 points vs. WCU and is averaging 8.0 ppg.
• The Cougars lead the CAA in scoring defense (63.4 ppg) and are 3-0 this season when holding foes under 60 points.
Delaware
• Defeated Fairleigh Dickinson 73-72 in their home opener but lost 69-50 at Temple.
• Senior Marvin King-Davis posted double-doubles against FDU (14pts/10reb) and Temple (13pts/10reb). He has three double-doubles in the first four games and is averaging 14.0 ppg and 9.3 rpg.
• Sophomore Kory Holden tallied a season-high 21 points, five rebounds and six assists in the FDU win. Holden is averaging 12.0 ppg and ranks 3rd in the CAA with 5.3 apg.
• Cazmon Hayes made the game-winning free throw with 0.9 seconds left vs. FDU and had a season-high 17 points and a career-best nine rebounds at Temple.
• Guard Chivarsky Corbett suffered a season-ending knee injury at Temple and guard Devonne Pinkard is out 3-6 weeks with a foot injury.
• The Blue Hens outrebounded FDU 48-33 and have beaten all four opponents on the boards. UD leads the CAA in rebound margin at +9.0 rpg.
Drexel
• Suffered losses to UNC Asheville (85-66), Alaska-Anchorage (71-65) and San Diego (62-59) at the Great Alaska Shootout.
• Freshman Terrell Allen scored a career-high 19 points on 7-of-10 FG shooting and dished out six assists vs. UNCA. He’s second among CAA freshmen with 11.7 ppg and fifth among all CAA players in assists (4.3 apg).
• Sammy Mojica came off the bench to score a season-best 16 points against UNCA, topped it with a team-high 20 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists vs. UAA and had a team-best 15 points against San Diego.
• Senior Tavon Allen contributed 16 points vs. UAA and has scored double digits in five of the Dragons’ six games this season.
• Forward Kazembe Abif grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds vs. San Diego. He ranks fourth in the CAA with 8.5 rpg.
• Sophomore Rashann London chipped in 11 points against UAA. He’s scored double figures in five of six contests and is second on the team with 12.0 ppg.
Elon
• Split their final two games in the Battle 4 Atlantis, beating Mount St. Mary’s 79-74, but losing to Texas A&M CC, 85-81.
• Senior Tanner Samson scored a season-high 23 points vs. TAMCC and went over the 1,000-point mark for his career. He also ranks 3rd in career treys (254) at Elon.
• Freshman Dainan Swoope averaged 13.5 ppg last week, including a career-high 16 points vs. TAMCC. He leads Elon with 16 3-pointers and tops all CAA freshmen and the team in scoring (12.7 ppg).
• Junior Luke Eddy scored a season-high 17 points and dished out five assists against MSM and followed with 12 points and five assists vs. TAMCC.
• Dmitri Thompson tallied eight points and a team-high nine rebounds vs. MSM, and has scored double figures in 4 of 6 games.
• Freshman Tyler Seibring had 9 points in the MSM win, including a key 3-pointer with 45 seconds remaining that put Elon on top.
Hofstra
• Defeated St. Bonaventure 89-83 on Saturday in their first road game of the season.
• Senior Ameen Tanksley poured in a season-best 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds at SBU. He’s scored double digits in all six games and is averaging 16.3 ppg.
• Juan’ya Green added 23 points and a team-high nine assists at SBU. He’s tallied double figures in 40 straight games and is averaging 19.8 ppg and a league-best 7.5 apg.
• Junior Brian Bernardi ranks second in the CAA in treys (19) and is fourth in 3-point FG% (51.4%).
• Transfer forward Denton Koon tallied 14 points and seven boards at SBU and is averaging 12.7 ppg and 6.8 rpg for the year.
• Rokas Gustys has posted two double-doubles this season and had 12 points and seven boards in the SBU win.
• Hofstra made 28-of-33 at the free throw line against SBU, with Green going 10-for-10.
James Madison
• Rolled past Eastern Mennonite 106-74 and earned an 89-75 road win at Marshall.
• Junior Shakir Brown posted his third double-double of the season at Marshall with career-highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds.
• Junior Dimitrije Cabarkapa poured in a career-high 27 points on 10-of-12 FG shooting vs. EMU. He’s averaging 12.4 ppg on 57.9% FG shooting for the season.
• Junior Yohanny Dalembert tallied a double-double at Marshall with career-highs of 23 points and 15 rebounds.
• Senior Ron Curry had 10 points and 5 assists at Marshall. He’s scored double digits in 10 of his last 11 games and has 27 assists with only 9 turnovers this season.
• JMU reached the 100-point mark for the first time since 2007 vs. EMU. The Dukes shot 65.8% from the floor, including 15-of-24 from 3-point range.
• The Dukes are averaging a CAA-best 9.9 treys made per game.
UNCW
• Improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1995 after a convincing 94-73 road win at ETSU.
• Junior Chris Flemmings led five players in double digits at ETSU with 18 points in only 24 minutes. He also made three steals.
• Senior guard Craig Ponder is averaging a team-best 16.0 ppg while shooting 55% from the floor and 57.1% (8-14) from three.
• Freshman C.J. Bryce added a season-high 14 points on 6-of-7 FG shooting at ETSU.
• Freshman Devontae Cacok came off the bench to contribute 13 points on 6-of-8 FG shooting and a team-high seven rebounds in 21 minutes at ETSU.
• UNCW shot 58.6% from the floor at ETSU, including 66.7% (20-30) in the second half. The Seahawks also had a 39-24 rebounding advantage.
• Junior forward Chuck Ogbodo leads the CAA with 11 blocked shots this season and is also averaging 5.0 rebounds per game.
Northeastern
• Upset 15-ranked Miami (Fla.), 78-77, last Friday. It was NU’s first win over a nationally ranked opponent since 1986.
• Senior Quincy Ford poured in a season-high 24 points at Miami, including the game-winning jumper at the buzzer. Ford was 5-of-10 from 3-point range and also had six rebounds and four steals. He’s scored double figures in all six games.
• Senior David Walker scored 21 points at Miami, which was his fourth 20-point outing of the season and his third in a row. He ranks 2nd in the CAA with 20.8 ppg.
• Northeastern made a season-high 12-of-22 three-pointers at Miami and is averaging 7.8 treys per game for the season.
• Freshman Jeremy Miller added a career-high nine points off the bench at Miami. He was 2-for-2 from 3-point range, including a critical 4-point play with 2:53 to go.
• Northeastern out-rebounded Miami 33-30 in the contest.
Towson
• Have won three in a row after cruising past Gallaudet 88-45 and beating Coppin State 81-77 in overtime last week.
• Guard Byron Hawkins scored a team-high 20 points at CSU, which was his third 20-point effort in the past four contests. He’s averaging a team-high 16.7 ppg for the season.
• Arnaud William Adala Moto contributed 14 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals vs. Gallaudet and had 17 points at CSU.
• Freshman Jordan McNeil hit 3-of-6 treys and scored a career-high 14 points in 12 minutes against Gallaudet.
• Junior John Davis chipped in 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds at CSU.
• Senior Timajh Parker-Rivera posted a double-double vs. Gallaudet with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
• Towson out-rebounded Coppin 44-28 and is +7.9 in rebound margin for the season.
William & Mary
• Rolled past Hampton 86-67 at home, but lost 79-77 at Howard last week.
• Junior Omar Prewitt tallied back-to-back double-doubles vs. Hampton (22pts/10reb) and Howard (17pts/10reb).
• Daniel Dixon hit 5-of-7 treys and shared team-high scoring honors with 22 points vs. Hampton. He leads the CAA with 21 threes.
• Terry Tarpey posted a double-double vs. Hampton with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. The 17 boards were the most by a Tribe player in 20 years.
• Sophomore Connor Burchfield netted a career-high 19 points at Howard, going 7-for-7 from the floor and 5-of-5 from three.
• David Cohn scored 10 points vs. Hampton and had 10 points and 9 assists at Howard. He has 28 assists and only 8 TO’s this season.
• W&M had two players post double-doubles in the same game vs. Hampton for the first time since 2004.
