CAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - WEEKLY REPORT (FEB. 9)

RICHMOND, Va. (February 9, 2015) – Elon University senior Sam Coffer was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week while the University of Delaware’s Makeda Nicholas was named the CAA Rookie of the Week.

Senior Sam Coffer averaged 18.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, helping the Phoenix to a pair of road wins. Coffer shot 68.4 (13-for-19) from the field and 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from the three-point range. She finished the week with five assists and three steals. At Towson, Coffer had 18 points, five boards, and four assists. She followed that up with a double-double against College of Charleston, finishing with a season-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. She went 7-for-10 from the field with a career-high five three-pointers.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:

Freshman Makeda Nicholas averaged 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds to help Delaware to a 2-0 week. She connected on 41.7 percent of her shots for the week while contributing five steals and five assists in her two starts. Against Northeastern, Nicholas notched 17 points and four blocks, both career bests, while grabbing five rebounds. She then had six points, six rebounds, and three assists in the win against UNCW.
 
#CAAHoops – The Week that Was

College of Charleston (4-18; 2-9 CAA): The Cougars had just one game on the slate, a hard-fought loss to Elon. Breanna Bolden fell just one rebound shy of a double-double, dropping 21 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
 
Delaware (12-11; 7-5 CAA): The Blue Hens pushed their winning streak to four games with a pair of home wins against Northeastern and UNCW. Hannah Jardine averaged 17.0 points and 7.5 rebounds for the week, which included a 27-point, 11-rebound effort against UNCW.

Drexel (14-9; 8-4 CAA): Drexel suffered a pair of tough losses to William & Mary in double overtime and to James Madison. Senior Jackie Schluth averaged 12.0 points per game while Rachel Pearson and Carrie Alexander each contributed 11.5 per contest last week.
 
Elon (14-8; 7-4 CAA): The Phoenix posted back-to-back wins over Towson and College of Charleston. Elon was paced by Sam Coffer, who averaged 18.5 points per game. Elon scored 84 points at Towson, for its highest scoring game of the season, and hit 15 three-pointers which ties the third most in CAA single game history.
 
Hofstra (13-8; 6-4 CAA): The Pride split games, falling at James Madison before returning home to edge William & Mary. Sophomore guard Kelly Loftus averaged 21.5 points per game in part to a 30-point effort against the Tribe. Redshirt sophomore forward Anjie White also had a career day against William & Mary, posting 17 points and 12 rebounds in her second start of the season against William & Mary.

James Madison (20-2; 11-0 CAA): The Dukes remained undefeated in CAA play and recorded their tenth-consecutive, 20-win season with victories at Hofstra and Drexel. Angela Mickens had a solid week, averaging 9.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. She was also named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List which recognizes the top point guard in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball.
 
UNCW (8-14; 4-7 CAA): The Seahawks had their losing streak extended to three games with a 69-60 setback against Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore forward Naqaiyyah Teague posted her first double-double of the season in the loss, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Shatia Cole extended her streak of consecutive games with 10 or more points to four in a row after tallying 11 points in the loss at Delaware.
 
Northeastern (4-18; 1-11 CAA): The Huskies suffered a pair of tough losses, falling at Delaware and at home to Towson. Junior Samantha DeFreese tallied back-to-back double-doubles, averaging 17.0 points and 11.0 rebounds while rookie Maureen Taggart had another strong week averaging 11.5 points per game. Senior A’lece Mark posted her 1,000th career point against Towson on Sunday.
 
Towson (10-14; 6-6 CAA): Towson went 1-1 last week, falling to Elon before bouncing back to pick up a big road win over Northeastern. Junior guard Dominique Johnson led the Tigers as she averaged 19.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game. Freshman guard Breonn Hughey added 9.5 points and 7.5 assists per game.
 
William & Mary (11-12; 5-7 CAA): After topping Drexel in double overtime, the Tribe saw their four-game winning streak come to an end at Hofstra. Sophomore Alexandra Masaquel averaged 11 points and 7.5 rebounds while rookie Abby Rendle averaged 12.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, and 1.5 steals.
