W&M, CofC, Elon, JMU Win In Women's Tennis Quarters

CAA WOMEN'S TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 17, 2015) – Top-seeded William & Mary, #2 College of Charleston, #3 Elon and #5 James Madison each earned 4-0 victories in the quarterfinals of the 2015 CAA Women’s Tennis Championship on Friday at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
 
JMU (14-7) pulled the lone upset of the day as it turned in an impressive effort to knock off the defending champion Seahawks. The Dukes claimed the doubles point as the No. 2 team of Kimmy Herrock and Rebecca Harris downed Miller Hales and Alyssa Ritchie, 8-2, and the No. 3 tandem of Rachel Nelson and Sarah Khan edged Alix Theodossiou and Hollie Champion, 8-6. In singles, the Dukes continued the momentum as Alex Huie defeated Christine Kharkevitch 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 and Harris beat Hales, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. JMU closed out the win at No. 2 when Nelson battled past Annika Sillanpaa, 6-4, 6-4.
 
William & Mary (14-6) got strong play from the top of its lineup in beating Delaware. The Tribe’s top two doubles teams each posted 8-1 victories as the No. 1 duo of Leeza Nemchinov and Jeltje Loomans beat Danea Jonjic’ and Arielle Shuren and the No. 2 tandem of Maria Groener and Olivia Thaler defeated Amanda Studnicki and Kim Milla. In singles, Nemchinov rolled past Jonjic’ 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 and Groener blanked Christina Harrington, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Loomans ended the contest with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Shuren at No. 2.
 
College of Charleston (13-12) recorded a hard-fought win over #7 Drexel. The Dragons’ No. 3 team of Lea Winkler and Kendra Bunch picked up an 8-2 win over Brooke McAmis and Grace Baker, but CofC battled back to gain the doubles point. The Cougars’ top team of Jenny Falcone and Katherine Schofield were 8-3 victors over Nicole Pivonka and Clary Rodriguez and the No. 2 tandem of Samantha Maddox and Mary Argyriou also won an 8-3 decision over Erin Bowsher and Ryshena Providence. In singles, the Coguars’ Sarah Jane Jones beat Bunch, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 6, Schofield topped Rodriguez, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3, and Falcone rallied for a three-set win over Winkler at No. 4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
 
Elon (14-8) picked up a victory over #6 Towson in its first CAA Tournament appearance. The Phoenix earned a very competitive doubles point as the No. 2 duo of Olivia Lucas and Bridget Liddell defeated Ayana Dow and Lucy Williams, 8-4, and the No. 3 team of Taylor Casey and Erica Braschi edged Cailey Easdale and Barbora Vasilkova, 8-7 (7). Elon won three straight-set matches in singles as Kirsten Ward beat Nicole Shakhnazarova, 6-1, 6-2, Braschi downed AJ Gomer, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 and Lazarova topped Sophie Lesage, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.
 
In Saturday’s semifinals at 10 a.m., #1 William & Mary will face #5 James Madison and #2 College of Charleston will take on #3 Elon.
