RICHMOND, Va. (August 11, 2015) – Northeastern, which has captured the last two CAA women’s soccer championships, has been picked to win the title again in 2015 according to a vote of the league’s head coaches. Hofstra senior forward
Leah Galton was voted as the CAA Preseason Player of the Year.
Northeastern finished with 75 points and sits atop the preseason poll while Hofstra received 72 points and was predicted to place second. The Huskies went 15-5-3 overall in 2014, recorded a school-record 17 shutouts and captured their first regular season title since 2009. The Huskies were the first school in 13 years to claim back-to-back CAA Championships, and also won their first NCAA Tournament game. Northeastern returns the majority of its squad, including 2014 CAA Rookie of the Year,
Hannah Lopiccolo (6g, 4a), sophomore forward
Kayla Cappuzzo (4g, 5a), and junior back
Mackenzie Dowd (7g).
Hofstra posted a 13-7-1 record last season and advanced to the finals of the CAA Championship. The Pride will have a veteran squad which includes Galton and fellow Preseason All-CAA midfielder
Jeannine Molleda (2g, 4a), who was also an All-CAA First Team selection in 2014. Galton tallied 17 goals and four assists in 2014 to secure CAA Player of the Year honors for the second-straight season. She is a three-time All-CAA First Team selection and a three-time NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team pick.
James Madison was third with 66 points while William & Mary received 63 points in fourth. The Dukes went 12-8 overall and 7-2 in CAA play last season, and return leading scorer
