CONFERENCE NOTES:

TIGHT RACE ATOP CAA STANDINGS: The race for the CAA regular-season title is off to an exciting start with the top eight teams separated by only one game. Hofstra, Northeastern and William & Mary are locked in a three-way tie for first at 3-1, and College of Charleston, Elon, James Madison, UNCW and Towson are right behind at 2-2. Last week, W&M was the only team to go 2-0 in league play, while eight squads went 1-1. The CAA is the only conference in the nation to have its top eight teams bunched within one game of each other as of Jan. 11.

ROAD TEAMS ARE 10-10 IN CAA ACTION: Road teams have a 10-10 record thus far in CAA play and eight of the league’s 10 squads already have at least one road win. Visitors having success in CAA action continues a trend from last year when home teams were just 47-43.

PILING UP THE WINS: The CAA is one of only six Division I conferences to have at least eight teams with 10 or more wins through games of Jan. 10. The others are the ACC (14), Pac 12 (10), Big Ten (9), Atlantic 10 (8) and Big East (8).

FOUR CAA TEAMS AMONG TOP 73 IN LATEST RPI: Four CAA teams are ranked among the top 73 in the latest RPI report released by Collegiate Basketball News (rpiratings.com) on Jan. 11. William & Mary leads all CAA squads at #60, followed by College of Charleston at #67, Hofstra at #71 and Northeastern at #73. The CAA is ranked #9 among the nation’s 32 Division I conferences, which is its highest ranking ever at this point in the season, and is one of only eight conferences with four teams among the top 73 of the RPI along with the A-10, ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac 12 and SEC.

CAA EXCELS IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY:  The CAA turned in one of the strongest non-conference performances in conference history with the 10 squads putting together a 75-44 overall record. Making the numbers more impressive is the fact that less than half of those games were at home. CAA teams were dominant (47-8) at home and had 21 victories in true road contests, which is the 3rd-most among all conferences.

THREE-POINT SUCCESS: Several CAA teams are among the nation’s best at scoring from the 3-point line and defending it. Elon (10.7 pg/6th), James Madison (9.4 pg/25th), Hofstra (9.1 pg/33rd) and Northeastern (8.8 pg/44th) are among Division I leaders in 3’s per game while Hofstra (38.3%/42nd) is ranked in 3-point FG%. Defensively, William & Mary is 6th in 3-point FG percentage defense (26.7%), JMU is 23rd (30.3%) and College of Charleston is 25th (30.3%). Individually, Elon’s Tanner Samson (3.35 pg/14th), Hofstra’s Brian Bernardi (3.06 pg/31st) and W&M’s Daniel Dixon (3.0/33rd) are among Division I leaders in treys per game, while Bernardi (48%/11th), Samson (44.2%/35th) and Northeastern’s David Walker (43.1%/50th) are ranked in 3-point FG%.

UNCW RANKS SECOND IN TURNOVER MARGIN: UNCW ranks second nationally in turnover margin (+6.4 tpg) through games of Jan. 10. The Seahawks are forcing 17.5 turnovers per game, which ranks 9th in Division I, while committing 11.1. UNCW is also 12th nationally with 9.1 steals per game.

W&M’S TARPEY AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN STEALS: W&M senior Terry Tarpey ranks 4th nationally in steals (2.86 spg) through games of Jan. 10. In scoring, CofC’s Canyon Barry ranks 36th (19.7 ppg).
