CONFERENCE NOTES:

SOLID START FOR CAA TEAMS: It’s been a solid start to the season in CAA men’s basketball as the league’s 10 teams have combined for a 34-28 record. Elon captured the NIU Thanksgiving Classic last week and improved to 5-1 for the first time since 1987-88. UNCW is also off to a 5-1 start after beating Evansville and Toledo in the Music City Challenge. Hofstra went 3-1 last week, which included a third-place finish in the Gulf Coast Showcase. Eight of the league’s 10 teams enter the week with .500 or better overall records.

ROAD SUCCESS CONTINUES: Last season, CAA teams recorded 21 victories in true road games, which was the 3rd-most among all conferences. So far this season, CAA teams have won 10 true road games and are 7-5 on neutral courts. Four of the road setbacks have come to nationally ranked teams.

HOFSTRA’S GUSTYS TIES CAA REBOUND MARK: Hofstra junior Rokas Gustys tied the CAA record for rebounds in a game when he grabbed 26 in the Pride’s 65-57 win over South Dakota on Nov. 23. The 26 boards is the most by any NCAA Div. I player this season. Gustys, who also had 23 rebounds in Hofstra’s season-opening victory over Coppin State, leads the nation with 15.1 rebounds per game. Last season, Gustys had six games with at least 20 boards and ranked second nationally with 13.0 rpg. He’s had 10 or more rebounds in six contests this season and has recorded three double-doubles. William & Mary’s David Cully also had 26 rebounds vs. VMI on Jan. 17, 1996.

FRESHMEN MAKE IMMEDIATE IMPACT: The future appears to be bright based on performances from freshmen around the conference. Drexel guard Kurk Lee has scored double figures in all six games this season and ranks 4th in the league in scoring (16.3 ppg) and assists (4.7 apg). Hofstra guard Eli Pemberton has reached the 20-point mark three times, including 21 points vs. Vermont, and is averaging a team-best 14.9 ppg. William & Mary forward Nathan Knight had 14 points and seven rebounds against #12 Louisville and 11 points at #6 Duke. Delaware’s Ryan Daly had a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds at La Salle and is averaging 8.5 ppg.
