Greta Nauck is already UD's single-season leader in goals (24) and points (56).
Delaware's Nauck Headlines Field Hockey Awards, Teams
Tim McDonnell
RICHMOND, Va. (November 3, 2016) – Delaware sophomore midfielder
Greta Nauck has been selected as the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) field hockey Player of the Year according to a vote by the conference’s head coaches.
William & Mary junior
Erin Menges was named CAA Defensive Player of the Year, becoming just the second Tribe player to capture the league’s highest defensive award and first since 2005. Drexel freshman
Tess Bernheimer made history by becoming the first-ever Dragon to earn Rookie of the Year honors, while Delaware head coach
Rolf van de Kerkhof was picked as the Coach of the Year.
Nauck has enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign for the current No. 9 Blue Hens and has been one of the most consistent offensive players in all of Division I. The sophomore, originally from Krefeld, Germany, leads the CAA in shots (114), shots per game (6.00), points (56), points per game (2.95), goals (24), goals per game (1.26), and game-winning goals (six). On the final day of the regular season, Nauck broke the all-time single-season Delaware record for goals and also previously set the new single-season program record for points. Heading into the 2016 CAA Championship, the midfielder leads Division I with her goals per-game average and ranks third for her points per-game average.
Menges is William & Mary’s second-ever Defensive Player of the Year honoree. This fall, the junior has started every game for the Tribe and has contributed two goals and seven assists. Menges ranks ninth in Division I and first in the conference with five defensive saves. The Richmond, Va., native now owns two career All-CAA second team honors after also picking up All-Rookie honors as a freshman in 2014.
Bernheimer was twice named CAA Rookie of the Week during her first collegiate season and recently collected the most goals (six), assists (four) and points (16) for a DU freshman since 2011. Drexel’s first CAA Rookie of the Year award winner has been an added weapon for her team all season long, starting every game for the Dragons while also collecting two game-winning goals.
For the second time in his career, van de Kerkhof was picked as the Coach of the Year. Delaware is the only league team that has been ranked each week in the national NFHCA poll, including jumping up into the Top 10 five times. The ‘Hens were ranked as high as No. 8 twice this fall, which was the best ranking for the program since 1998. Currently, Delaware owns the longest winning streak in Division I (13 games) and last week finished the regular season tying a single-season school record with 17 wins overall, highlighted by an undefeated mark conference play for just the second time since 1991. UD previously hosted the CAA Championship in 2013 and captured its first of three consecutive titles.
Nauck was joined on the first team with three teammates to lead all conference squads. Juniors Taylor Lister (5 G, 8A) and Emmeline Oltmans (57 S, 1.50 GAA, 3 S/O) heard their names called along with senior Esmée Peet, who ends her impressive career with four All-CAA first team awards. Drexel senior Jessica McCarthy (7 G, 8 A), William & Mary junior Cammie Lloyd (15 G, 6 A) and Hofstra senior Claudia Marin Samper (18 G, 13 A) all made the first team, while James Madison’s Hannah Hall (11 G, 9 A), a junior, and Miranda Rigg (16 G), sophomore, rounded out the picks. McCarthy finishes her career with two All-CAA first team honors, while Marin Samper wraps up her historic career with three. The Pride senior also wrapped up the fall as the all-time HU leader in career assists (39) and points (151) and is second with 56 goals.
