CAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Jarrell Brantley, College of Charleston
So., F, 6-7, 245 - Columbia, S.C./Notre Dame Prep
Brantley averaged 14.5 points and 9.0 rebounds as College of Charleston went 2-0 with wins over Navy (70-64) and Davidson (76-61). The sophomore forward recorded a double-double with 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds as the Cougars rallied past Davidson and had 13 points and seven boards vs. Navy. For the week Brantley shot 47.4% from the floor and was 4-of-8 from 3-point range.
CAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Brian Dawkins, Elon
R-Jr., F, 6-8, 240 - Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny
Dawkins averaged 17.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in Elon’s 1-1 week, which included an overtime victory over FIU (84-81) and a narrow loss at Georgetown (77-74). The red-shirt junior forward scored 12 of his team-high 17 points in the second half and also grabbed seven rebounds at Georgetown and tallied 17 points in just 21 minutes against FIU, including a key bucket late in overtime. For the week, Dawkins shot 70% (14-20) from the floor and made 4-of-6 from three-point range.
CAA Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Eli Pemberton, Hofstra
Fr., G, 6-4, 190 - Middletown, Conn./Cheshire Academy
Pemberton averaged 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds as Hofstra extended its winning streak to four with road victories at Columbia (88-86) and Florida Atlantic (88-80). The freshman guard posted his first career double-double with a team-high 22 points and 10 boards at FAU and contributed 12 points and six rebounds at Columbia. For the week, Pemberton shot 58.8% (10-17) from the floor, including 5-of-9 from three-point range.
CONFERENCE NOTES:
CAA LEADS NATION IN ROAD VICTORIES: CAA teams have won 16 true road games and are 7-5 on neutral courts this season. The 16 road wins are the most of any Division I conference through games of Dec. 4. Four of the road setbacks have come against nationally ranked teams. Last season, CAA teams recorded 21 victories in true road games, which was the 3rd-most among all conferences.
HOFSTRA FACES #6 KENTUCKY ON SUNDAY: Hofstra will face #6 Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the Barclays Center as part of the Brooklyn Hoops Classic. The 3 p.m. contest will be nationally televised on ESPN. That game highlights a relatively light 13-game schedule around the conference this week as many schools enter final exams.
CAA RANKED 12TH IN LATEST RPI REPORT: The CAA is ranked 12th out of the nation’s 32 Division I conferences according to the latest RPI report released by Collegiate Basketball News (rpiratings.com). Three CAA teams are ranked in the top 100 with UNCW at #17, College of Charleston at #60 and Elon at #98.
SOLID START FOR CAA TEAMS: It’s been a solid start to the season in CAA men’s basketball as the league’s 10 teams have combined for a 46-35 record. UNCW is off to a 7-1 start after defeating Western Michigan and Pfeiffer last week to extend its winning streak to four. Hofstra (6-3) has also won four in a row after picking up road victories over Columbia and Florida Atlantic. College of Charleston (6-3) rallied past Davidson on Sunday for its third straight win, while Delaware and Drexel have captured their last two contests. Elon (6-2) had a five-game winning streak snapped after a narrow 77-74 loss at Georgetown on Sunday. Eight of the league’s 10 teams have .500 or better overall records.
UNCW PICKS UP VOTE IN AP TOP 25 POLL: UNCW picked up a vote in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll. It’s the second year in a row that the Seahawks have received votes in the poll. UNCW is off to a 7-1 start and has won four in a row.
College of Charleston
• On a 3-game win streak after beating Navy (70-64) and Davidson (76-61) last week.
• Joe Chealey tallied a game-high 24 points in the Davidson win. He’s scored double figures five times this season and has topped the 20-point mark twice.
• Freshman Grant Riller poured in a career-high 26 points vs. Navy on 7-of-10 FG shooting. It was the second 20-point effort of the year for Riller, who’s averaging 10.2 ppg.
• Jarrell Brantley posted his 3rd double-double of the season vs. Davidson (16 pts/11 reb). He’s scored double figures in a CAA-best 22 consecutive games dating back to last year. Brantley is 3rd in the CAA in rebounding (8.7 rpg).
• Cameron Johnson scored 14 vs. Navy and had a season-best 15 pts. against Davidson.
• CofC limited Davidson to a season-low 61 points and has held eight of its nine opponents under 70 points.
• CofC shot a season-high 46.2% vs. Navy.
Delaware
• Improved to 3-0 at home after topping rival Delaware State 64-49 last Friday.
• Chivarsky Corbett hit 5-of-8 threes and scored a team-high 16 points vs. DSU. He also grabbed 8 rebounds.
• Eric Carter pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds vs. DSU. It was his second game with double-digit boards.
• Cazmon Hayes, who has scored double figures in five games, chipped in 9 points and 7 rebounds in the DSU win.
• Anthony Mosley contributed 13 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists vs. DSU. He’s second in the CAA in steals (2.0 spg).
• UD had a 46-26 edge on the glass vs. Delaware State and leads the CAA in rebounding margin (+11.1 rpg) for the season.
• The Hens’ defense limited DSU to 32% FG shooting in the second and held the Hornets to 1-of-15 shooting from 3 for the game.
• Ryan Daly had 9 pts. and 7 boards vs. DSU.
Drexel
• Rallied from a 16-point deficit to post a 74-70 win at Lafayette and followed with a 78-72 victory at High Point.
• Kurk Lee scored a team-high 14 points at Lafayette and had 16 points and 8 assists at HPU. Lee has reached double figures in all 8 games and ranks 6th in the CAA in scoring (16.0 ppg) and 4th in assists (4.5 apg).
• Rodney Williams tallied 14 points and 7 rebounds at Lafayette and added 13 at HPU. He’s 8th in the CAA in scoring (15.1 ppg) and 5th in FG percentage (52.5%).
• Kari Jonsson hit 7-of-12 threes and scored a career-high 25 points at HPU. He leads the CAA with 2.8 treys per game and is shooting 47.8% from beyond the arc.
• Austin Williams grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds at HPU and ranks 5th in the CAA with 7.1 rpg.
• Miles Overton averaged 12.5 ppg last week, including a season-high 13 pts at Lafayette.
• Drexel shot 58.1% from the floor in the second half at Lafayette.
Elon
• Edged FIU, 84-81 in OT, before falling 77-74 at Georgetown to end a 5-game win streak.
• Brian Dawkins scored a team-high 17 points vs. FIU and followed with 17 points and 7 rebounds at GU. He was 14-of-20 from the floor last week and ranks 12th nationally in FG percentage (67.7%) for the season.
• Luke Eddy added 13 points vs. FIU and 12 at GU, which was his fifth double-figure effort in the past six games.
• Tyler Seibring contributed 16 points and a team-high 9 rebounds vs. FIU. He’s scored double digits in 5 of 8 games and leads the team in rebounding (5.9 rpg).
• Dainan Swoope hit 3-of-5 treys and had 11 points and 5 assists at Georgetown.
• Elon has made at least eight 3-pointers in all eight games this season.
• Elon started 6-1 for the first time since the 1987-88 season.
• Elon has scored at least 70 pts. in 8 straight games for the first time since 1987-88.
Hofstra
• Ran their win streak to four after road victories at Columbia (88-86) and FAU (88-80).
• Brian Bernardi hit 5-of-8 threes and scored a team-high 21 points at CU and had 11 points at FAU. He ranks 2nd in career treys.
• Rokas Gustys, who leads the nation in rebounding (14.0 ppg), grabbed 15 boards at FAU. He has two games with 20+ boards and seven with at least 10 rebounds.
• Eli Pemberton posted his first double-double (22 pts/10 reb) in the FAU win. He’s tallied double digits in 7 games and ranks 7th in the league in scoring (15.3 ppg).
• Deron Powers averaged 16.0 ppg and 8.0 apg last week. He’s scored double digits in 6 straight games and tops HU with 4.2 apg.
• Ty Greer contributed 15 points in both games last week.
• Jamall Robinson made 6-of-10 threes and averaged 12.0 ppg last week.
• Hofstra has made 11 or more threes in six games and is shooting 40.7% from the arc.
James Madison
• Picked up their first win at Longwood (71-59) after a loss at Charlotte (65-56).
• Jackson Kent was 5-for-5 from 3-point range and scored a career-high 22 points at Longwood. He also grabbed 7 rebounds.
• Yohanny Dalembert scored a team-high 12 points with 4 blocks at Charlotte and had 16 points and 6 rebounds at Longwood.
• Joey McLean tallied 11 points at Charlotte and 10 at Longwood. He’s scored double figures in six of JMU’s eight contests.
• Tom Vodanovich pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds at Longwood and scored all seven of his points in the second half.
• JMU limited a Charlotte offense that was averaging 86.2 ppg to just 65 points and held Longwood to 56 points on 37.7% FG shooting.
• The Dukes have out-rebounded all eight of their opponents this season and are +5.5 in rebound margin.
UNCW
• Won 97-92 at Western Michigan and set 9 school records in a 126-113 triumph over Pfeiffer. On a 4-game winning streak.
• Devontae Cacok scored a career-high 34 points on 16-of-17 FG shooting and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds vs. Pfeiffer. He ranks 3rd in Div. I in FG percentage (78.7%).
• Chris Flemmings averaged 25.5 ppg last week, including a career-high 34 points vs. Pfeiffer. He’s hit double digits in all 8 games and ranks 2nd in the CAA with 19.8 ppg.
• C.J. Bryce scored a team-best 18 points with 8 rebounds at WMU and followed with 25 points and 7 assists vs. Pfeiffer. He’s had at least 13 points in 7 of UNCW’s 8 games.
• Denzel Ingram had 16 points and 6 assists at WMU and dished out 10 assists vs. Pfeiffer. He’s 2nd in the CAA in assists (6.5 apg).
• Ambrose Mosley made 5-of-9 threes and scored a season-high 17 points at WMU. He’s shooting 44.4% from beyond the arc.
• UNCW shot 50.8% from the floor at WMU and 60% against Pfeiffer.
Northeastern
• Suffered narrow road setbacks at Cornell (80-77) and Stony Brook (77-75) last week. All 4 losses have been by 4 points or less.
• T.J. Williams tallied team-highs of 27 points and 9 assists at Cornell and 20 points and 7 assists at SBU. He’s scored double digits in all 8 games, including six 20+-point efforts. He leads the CAA in scoring (22.8 ppg) and assists (6.6 apg).
• Alex Murphy scored a career-high 24 points with 6 rebounds and 4 assists at Cornell and had 19 points and 6 boards at SBU. He was 19-of-26 from the floor in the 2 games.
• Devon Begley hit 3-of-4 treys and had 12 points at SBU, which was his 2nd double-digit effort in three games. He made six steals last week and leads NU with 12.
• NU has made at least eight treys in six of its eight contests and is shooting 38.4% from beyond the arc.
• Jeremy Miller is 16-of-25 from the floor over the past five games.
Towson
• Split home games last week, cruising past Goucher (99-37) but losing to ODU (60-58).
• Mike Morsell tallied a team-high 14 points vs. ODU. He’s led TU in scoring five times and is averaging a team-best 17.6 ppg.
• John Davis added 10 points and a team-high 7 rebounds vs. ODU. He’s tied for the CAA lead with three double-doubles this season.
• William Adala Moto has scored double figures in 6 of 8 games and is averaging 13.5 ppg and a team-high 6.9 rpg.
• Towson was out-rebounded for only the 2nd time in the past 27 games by ODU (37-34). The Tigers are +8.1 in rebound margin.
• Freshman Dennis Tunstall set career-highs with 16 points and 13 rebounds in 22 minutes vs. GC. He was 7-of-7 from the floor.
• DeShaun Morman added 11 points vs. Goucher and ODU. He’s averaging 13.3 ppg over the past three games.
• Towson has held three of its last four opponents to under 40% FG shooting.
William & Mary
• Dropped road games at Central Michigan (91-81) and Hampton (79-69) last week.
• Omar Prewitt posted double-doubles vs. CMU (26 pts/career-high 13 reb) and HU (21 pts/11 reb). He’s scored 20+ points in 3 straight games and is leading the Tribe in scoring (16.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.4 rpg).
• Jack Whitman added 12 points and 8 rebounds at CMU and 9 points and 6 boards at HU. He’s averaging 11.0 ppg and 6.4 rpg while shooting 62.2% from the floor.
• Greg Malinowski scored a season-high 14 points at CMU and HU. He was 7-of-11 from 3-point range in the two games.
• Daniel Dixon, who ranks 6th on W&M’s career treys list (180), tallied 11 points in the loss at Hampton.
• Freshman Nathan Knight chipped in 8 points at HU and is averaging 7.9 ppg.
• W&M has out-rebounded five of its seven foes and is +4.0 in rebound margin.
