CAA BASEBALL WEEKLY REPORT - MARCH 14 (PDF format)
CAA BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Tyler McVicar, Elon
Sr., 1B, Melrose, Mass./Maiden Catholic
McVicar batted .529 (9-for-17) with a double, homer, three runs scored and eight RBI’s in Elon’s 3-1 week. The senior first baseman had at least two hits in all four games, including a 3-for-5 effort with five RBI’s in a victory over Liberty. He also drove in the go-ahead run in a win over The Citadel on Sunday. McVicar has reached base safely in 12 consecutive games.
CAA BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Ron Marinaccio, Delaware
So., RHP, Toms River, N.J./Toms River North
Marinaccio improved to 4-0 with a 1.08 ERA after limiting Binghamton to one run on three hits over 7.0 innings in Delaware’s 13-2 win over Binghamton last Friday. The sophomore right-hander struck out four and walked just one as he won his fourth consecutive start. Marinaccio is the first UD pitcher to start the season 4-0 since 2006.
CAA BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Kyle Baker, Delaware
Fr., OF, Hockessin, Del./Wilmington Charter
Baker batted .778 (7-for-9) with a double, three runs scored and three RBI’s in Delaware’s 5-0 week. He also stole four bases. Baker entered the week batting just .173 for the season before having a pair of three-hit performances in the Binghamton series.
CAA BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Ryan Conroy, Elon
Fr., RHP, Rotonda West, Fla./Lemon Bay
Conroy went 2-0 with a save in Elon’s four games last week. He allowed just one hit and no runs over the final 3.1 innings to earn a save against Liberty, tossed 1.2 shutout frames to pick up his first win vs. The Citadel on Saturday and gave up just one run over 3.0 innings to get another victory on Sunday. He struck out six on the week.
DIAMOND NOTES:
COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON (11-4)
The Cougars extended their winning streak to eight with a 4-0 week that included a 5-3 victory over Richmond and a three-game sweep of Mercer. Junior Jake Maziar led the CofC offense, batting .545 (6-11) with two doubles, a homer, five RBI’s and five runs scored. Ryan Brown and Morgan Phillips each had three hits in Saturday’s 5-4 triumph over Mercer, while freshman Bradley Dixon provided a walk-off RBI single in the ninth. Erven Roper homered twice and Phillips had a homer and drove in four in Sunday’s 17-13 win over Mercer. On the mound, sophomore Michael Carpin improved to 3-0 after limiting Richmond to three hits and one run over 6.0 innings while striking out a career-best eight. Nathan Helvey is also 3-0 after limiting Mercer to two runs over 7.1 frames.
DELAWARE (11-4)
The Blue Hens went 5-0 last week, beating Maryland (10-8) for the second time this season followed by a four-game sweep of Binghamton. Junior Doug Trimble batted .428 (9-21) with a double, triple, three homers, five RBI’s and eight runs scored. He had multiple hits in three games and scored in all five. Freshman Kyle Baker, who entered the week batting .179, hit .778 (7-9) with three runs scored, three RBI’s and four stolen bases. Freshman Adam Rapp had a game-winning two-run single in Sunday’s 5-4 victory over BU and a three-run double in Saturday’s 9-7 triumph. Nick Tierno knocked in four runs and James Meeker had three RBI’s in Friday’s win over BU. On the hill, Ron Marinaccio improved to 4-0 with a 1.08 ERA after holding BU to one run on three hits over 7.0 innings last Friday. He’s the first UD pitcher to start 4-0 since 2006.
ELON (8-8)
The Phoenix won three-of-four last week, defeating Liberty (10-5) before taking a 3-game series from The Citadel. Senior Tyler McVicar batted .529 (9-17) and drove in eight for the week. He was 3-for-5 with a homer and a career-high five RBI’s vs. Liberty and had the game-winning RBI against The Citadel on Sunday. Danny Lynch went 2-for-3 with a game-winning homer in Saturday’s 5-3 victory. On Sunday, Kyle Jackson doubled, homered and drove in two, while Ryne Ogren was 2-for-4 with a grand slam. Freshman Ryan Conroy went 2-0 with a save in three relief appearances. He allowed just one run over 8.0 innings and struck out six. Starter Jordan Barrett gave up just two earned runs over 6.1 innings and struck out seven on Saturday and tossed 1.1 shutout frames vs. LU.
HOFSTRA (4-10)
The Pride rolled past Army, 14-8, for their fourth straight win before dropping a three-game weekend series at Longwood. Freshman Nick Bottari batted .412 (7-17) with two homers, four runs scored and five RBI’s last week. He had multiple hits in three of the four contests, including going 3-for-5 with three RBI’s in the Army victory. Mat Annunziata had a three-run homer and two-run single vs. Army and finished with six RBI’s. Steven Foster hit .438 for the week with five walks and three stolen bases. Pitcher Alec Eisenberg gave up just four hits and no earned runs over 7.0 innings but took the loss in the opener at LU. Freshman John Rooney tossed three perfect frames to get his first collegiate win against Army. Adam Heidenfelder struck out eight over 4.2 innings of work last week.
JAMES MADISON (7-9)
The Dukes went 2-3 on the road last week, winning at VMI (12-8) and Davidson (7-6) before falling in a 3-game series at Gardner-Webb. Sophomore Kyle McPherson had a big week offensively, batting .579 (11-19) with a double, triple, four RBI’s and seven runs scored. He had multiple hits in four of the five contests, including a 4-for-4 effort with three RBI’s at VMI, and raised his season average from .250 to .356. Adam Sisk had a game-tying three-run homer vs. VMI and smacked a two-run shot at Gardner-Webb on Saturday. On the mound, Michael Evans gave up just one unearned run and three hits over 5.0 innings in two appearances last week and picked up the win against Davidson. Freshman reliever Christian Bourne lowered his ERA to 1.13 after not allowing a hit in 3.0 innings during two apperances last week.
UNCW (9-5)
The Seahawks improved to 9-1 at home after beating UNCG, 8-4, last Wednesday, but were beaten in all three weekend games at North Florida. Terence Connelly was 3-for-3 and drove in two in the UNCG victory. Nick Feight and Daniel Stack each had two hits and three RBI’s in Sunday’s 12-11 setback at UNF. Feight is on a career-best 8-game hitting streak and has reached base in nine straight games. Pitcher Ryan Foster scattered eight hits and allowed only an unearned run over 7.1 innings in Friday’s 3-2 loss at UNF. He struck out five and didn’t issue a walk.
NORTHEASTERN (7-8)
The Huskies went 1-3 at Pac 12 foe Washington State last weekend. NU took the opener, 5-3, as catcher Josh Treff’s solo homer in the fourth put the Huskies ahead to stay. Keith Kelly was 3-for-5 and scored a run in the victory. Charlie McConnell drove in both runs in Sunday’s 7-2 setback to the Cougars. On the mound, junior Aaron Civale (3-1) limited WSU to seven hits over 7.2 innings and struck out a career-high 11, but suffered his first loss in a 4-1 setback. Relievers Brian Christitan and Andrew Misiaszek combined to toss six shutout frames out of the bullpen in the 5-3 win.
TOWSON (3-10)
The Tigers dropped three of four last week, but picked up a 6-3 victory in 14 innings at Norfolk State on Saturday. Junior Colin Dyer’s bases-loaded triple in the 14th gave Towson the win. Chris Henze had four hits and Colin Gimblet added three in the victory as the duo combined to score five runs. Kyle Stricker picked up the win out of the bullpen after allowing just three hits over 4.2 shutout innings and striking out three. In Friday’s 12-7 loss at NSU, Richie Palacios was 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot, while Cuinn Mullins went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI’s.
WILLIAM & MARY (6-10)
The Tribe went 1-5 last week to close out their West Coast trip. W&M split a doubleheader with San Diego before dropping a pair of games to Connecticut and Cal State Northridge. Charles Ammer went 3-for-7 with three RBI’s in a 13-11 victory over USD, including a game-winning two-run single in the 10th. Cullen Large and Hunter Smith both went 3-for-5 in the victory. Ryan Hall belted a three-run trip in a trip-ending 11-7 loss to CSUN. On the mound, Mitchell Aker limited UConn to two hits and no earned run over 7.0 innings while striking out seven, but didn’t get a decision in a 3-2 setback.
