CAA Tennis Weekly Honors - March 2

RICHMOND, Va. (March 2, 2016) – The CAA has recognized six men’s and women’s tennis players for outstanding performances last week.
 
UNCW sophomore Andres Torres (Armenia, Colombia) and the Elon duo of junior Chris Humphreys (Albuquerque, N.M.) and junior Petar Tomic (Belgrade, Serbia) earned CAA men’s tennis honors. Receiving accolades on the women’s side were William & Mary freshman Lauren Goodman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and the James Madison tandem of junior Rachel Nelson (Big Prairie, Ohio) and junior Timea Guibe (Noisy le Roi, France).
 
Torres was selected as the CAA men’s tennis Player of the Week after providing the match-clinching points in UNCW’s victories over #25 N.C. State (4-3) and Brown (5-2). Playing at No. 6 singles, Torres outlasted NCSU’s Igor Saveljic, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-5 to give the Seahawks the upset victory on the road. He then rallied from a set down to defeat Brown’s Aaron Sandberg, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Torres improved to 3-0 this season as UNCW moved up to #51 in the national rankings.
 
Humphreys and Tomic were honored as the CAA men’s Doubles Team of the Week after going 2-0 in Elon’s narrow wins over Brown (4-3) and VCU (4-3). Competing at No. 3 doubles, the Phoenix tandem edged Brown’s Jack Haworth and Charles Tan, 7-6 (8-6). They moved up to No. 2 doubles against VCU and posted a 6-3 triumph against Philip Mobius and Arvid Noren. Humphreys and Tomic are now 2-2 on the season.
 
Goodman was named the CAA women’s tennis Player of the Week after posting a 2-0 record at No. 3 singles as William & Mary beat #57 Harvard (5-2) and Liberty (6-1). The freshman knocked off her first nationally ranked foe with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over #111 Erica Oosterhout of Harvard. She followed by rolling past Liberty’s Aleksandra Panchenko, 6-1, 6-2. Goodman who also had a doubles victory last week, improved her singles mark to 7-4 in dual matches.
 
Nelson and Guibe were chosen as the CAA women’s Doubles Team of the Week after going undefeated in doubles in JMU’s victories over Norfolk State (6-1) and Hampton (7-0). Playing together for the first time at No. 1 doubles, the duo downed Hampton’s Mariam Mitaishvili and Mikaela Prince, 6-2. They also recorded wins with different partners vs. Norfolk State as Guibe and Kimmy Herrock rolled to a 6-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles and Nelson and Emma Petersen had a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.
