CAA BASEBALL WEEKLY REPORT - MARCH 8 (PDF format)
CAA BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Chad Carroll, James Madison
Sr., SS, Oakton, Va./Oakton
Carroll batted .625 (10-for-16) with two doubles, a triple, four RBI’s and five runs scored in JMU’s 3-1 week. The senior shortstop had multiple hits in all four games, including a pair of three-hit performances. He’s had two or more hits in six straight contests and is batting a team-best .426 for the season, which ranks second in the conference.
CAA BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Bailey Ober, College of Charleston
So., RHP, Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian School
Ober didn’t allow a hit over 7.2 innings in College of Charleston’s 1-0 victory over The Citadel last Saturday. The junior right-hander struck out nine and didn’t issue a walk before being removed after reaching his pitch limit. He evened his record at 1-1 this season.
CAA BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Kevin Mohollen, Delaware
Fr., OF, Wallingford, Pa./Strath-Haven
Mohollen batted .467 (7-15) with a double, triple, homer and seven runs scored in Delaware’s 3-1 week. The freshman outfielder was 4-for-5 and scored four times in the Blue Hens’ 12-7 victory over nationally ranked Maryland. He also stole two bases.
CAA BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Richie Palacios, Towson
Fr., SS, Brooklyn, N.Y./Berkley Carroll School
Palacios batted .429 (6-14) with three runs scored and two RBI’s as Towson went 2-1 at the Wake Forest tournament. The freshman shortstop had multiple hits in all three contests and drove in the game-winning run as the Tigers defeated Harvard, 6-5.
DIAMOND NOTES:
COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON (7-4)
The Cougars went 4-1 last week, including a 9-4 victory over nationally ranked Coastal Carolina and a three-game weekend sweep of city rival The Citadel. Bradley Jones batted .313 (5-of-16) with five RBI’s last week. He homered twice in a loss to Georgia Southern and also went deep in the Coastal victory to extend his streak to four straight games with a homer. Freshman Dupree Hart had a hit in all five games last week, and batted.313 with five RBI’s. Four of those came in the victory over Coastal. On the mound, sophomore Bailey Ober didn’t allow a hit over 7.2 innings and fanned nine in Saturday’s 1-0 win over the Citadel. Senior Nathan Helvey threw a complete-game 4-hitter with just one run allowed in Friday’s 5-1 triumph over the Bulldogs.
DELAWARE (6-4)
The Blue Hens won three-of-four last week, highlighted by a 12-7 triumph over #28 Maryland. Freshman Kevin Mohollen was 4-for-5 with a homer and four runs scored vs. the Terps and he hit .467 for the week. Third baseman Diaz Nardo hit .417 for the week and drove in a pair of runs against Maryland and in a win over UMass Lowell. Sophomore pitcher Ron Marinaccio improved to 3-0 on the season after limiting UMass Lowell to two hits over 7.0 shutout innings and striking out seven in a 4-2 triumph. In Sunday’s 4-2 win over Delaware State, Brandon Walter gave up just six hits and two runs over 7.0 innings and struck out nine for his first victory of the season.
ELON (5-7)
The Phoenix split four games last week, highlighted by an 8-7 victory at #16 East Carolina last Wednesday. It was the fourth year in a row that Elon has beaten a top 25 foe. Danny Lynch went 3-for-6 with three RBI’s and Tyler McVicar was 2-for-5 and drove in three vs. the Pirates. Lynch was also 2-for-3 with two RBI vs. Appalachian State, while McVicar homered against Bowling Green. Chris Hall threw 1.2 shutout innings of relief to pick up the win at ECU and also earned a save in a 4-3 victory over ASU. Freshman Mason Daniels improved to 2-1 after holding ASU to two runs on three hits over 5.1 frames.
HOFSTRA (3-7)
The Pride swept a three-game weekend series at Coppin State, outscoring the Eagles by a combined score of 49-4. The 49 runs set a school record for runs in a 3-game series. Outfielder Mat Annuziata batted .667 (8-12) with four doubles, a homer, seven runs scored and eight RBI’s. He has a five-game hitting streak. Ryan Karl batted .545 with three doubles and four RBI’s while Nick Bottari hit .417 with a homer, three doubles and seven RBI’s. The Pride pitching staff held CSU scoreless for 22 consecutive innings including back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 2012. Alec Eisenberg gave up just three hits over 6.0 scoreless innings with six strikeouts and Bowie Matteson allowed only four hits in five shutout frames. Coach John Russo earned his 100th career victory.
JAMES MADISON (5-6)
The Dukes went 3-1 last week, winning 2-1 at George Washington before taking 2-of-3 at home over UMBC. JMU scored 36 runs in the UMBC series. Shortstop Chad Carroll led the offense by batting .625 (10-16) with two doubles, a triple and five runs scored. He had multiple hits in all four games. Brett Johnson homered and drove in three in the opener vs. UMBC, while Adam Sisk was 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI’s on Saturday. Mike Sciorra was 8-for-12 with six runs scored in the UMBC series. Bradley McKay went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBI in Sunday’s 13-5 triumph. Michael Evans threw 4.1 scoreless innings in three relief appearances and got the win vs. GW.
UNCW (8-2)
The Seahawks split four games, falling 5-2 at NC State before taking two-of-three at home over Penn State. Sophomore Nick Feight batted .600 for the week with a pair of homers vs. PSU and five RBI’s. Gavin Stupienski went 6-for-13 in the series vs. PSU. On the mound, Ryan Foster improved to 3-0 after allowing just one hit and an unearned run over 7.2 innings in a 5-1 win over PSU. Freshman Alex Royalty also moved to 3-0 after giving up one run on three hits over 7.0 frames against the Nittany Lions.
NORTHEASTERN (6-5)
The Huskies won two-of-three against Cornell in Winter Haven, Fla. Nolan Lang led the offense, going 4-for-10 with a pair of multi-hit games. Freshman Jake Farrell batted .333 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI’s. NU won the opener vs. Cornell, 6-0, as Aaron Civale gave up only five hits over seven shutout innings. Civale is now 3-0 on the season. The Huskies won Sunday’s finale, 11-0, as James Mulry surrendered three hits over 6.0 shutout frames and struck out five. Mason Koppens had a three-run triple to help win the series.
TOWSON (2-7)
The Tigers went 2-1 at the Wake Forest Invitational, rebounding from an 8-4 loss to Wake Forest by beating Richmond (3-2) and Harvard (6-5). Freshman Richie Palacios batted .429 in the tournament with three runs scored. He had multiple hits in all three games and drove in the winning run against Harvard. Brady Policelli was 3-for-5 and drove in a pair against Harvard. Junior Chris Henze delivered a walk-off single in the ninth to beat Richmond. Starter Austin Clark limited the Spiders to two hits and an unearned run over the first five innings and reliever Lee Lawler threw 1.2 shutout frames to get the win.
WILLIAM & MARY (5-5)
The Tribe dropped all three games last week, falling 16-8 at nationally ranked Virginia before starting its West Coast swing with setbacks to Oregon State (12-3) and San Diego (9-3). Ryan Hall and Charley Gould each went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs against Virginia. Hall followed with a 3-for-5 effort from the leadoff spot vs. Oregon State and a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI against San Diego. Gould, Cullen Large, Charles Ameer and Kyle Wrighte also had a pair of hits vs. USD. The Tribe has six more games on its trip this week.
