SOUTHPORT, N.C. (April 24, 2016)
– The College of Charleston won its third-straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men’s Golf Championship while the Cougars’ own William Rainey was the individual medalist, winning in dramatic fashion. Rainey finished with a 54-hole score of five-under 211 (71-69-71) on the par-72, 6,784-yard Founders Club course at St. James Plantation.
 
Entering the final three holes, Drexel senior Christopher Crawford stood at -4 while Rainey, a junior, was in a three-way tie for second place with James Madison junior Ryan Cole and UNCW sophomore Thomas Eldridge, all of whom were one-stroke back. Rainey birdied holes 16 and 17 and made par on 18 to take over the individual lead. Rainey’s three-day total of five-under tied him for the seventh lowest three-round total to par in CAA Championship history.
 
Cole finished as the runner up with a three-under 213 (76-67-70) while Crawford was third with a 214 (72-71-71). In fourth place was Eldridge at 216 (74-68-74). Tied for fifth place at 217 (+1) was CofC’s Parker Derby (73-74-70) and Elon’s Jonathan DiIanni (79-68-70). The top-five individual scorers earned CAA All-Tournament Team honors.
 
As a team, College of Charleston shot a collective 869 (+5) to earn the CAA’s automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. James Madison finished as the runner-up with three-day score of 891 (+27) while UNCW was third at 893 (+29). Elon was two strokes back in fourth at 895 (+31). Drexel finished fifth with an 899 (+35) followed by William & Mary (+40), Delaware (+47), Towson (+55) and Hofstra (+93).
 
Rounding out the top individual finishers was UNCW’s Patrick Cover in seventh with a two-over 218 (76-67-75), CofC’s Philip Oweida (77-68-76) and William & Mary’s Austin Morrison (81-72-68) who tied for eighth 221 (+5) and JMU’s Alex Henderson (72-74-76) and Towson’s Ryan Siegler (79-71-72) who tied for tenth at 222 (+6)
 
College of Charleston will learn its NCAA Championship fate on Thursday, May 5 at 9:30 a.m. live on the Golf Channel.
