CAA BASEBALL WEEKLY REPORT - MAY 2 (PDF format)

CAA BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Robbie Thorburn, UNCW
Jr., OF, Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons

Thorburn batted .650 (13-for-20) with four doubles, three triples, 11 runs scored and four RBI’s in UNCW’s 4-1 week. The junior outfielder batted .750 (9-12) and crossed the plate eight times in the Seahawks’ three-game sweep of Hofstra and recorded three hits in four straight games last week. He’s currently on a career-best 7-game hitting streak.

CAA BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Nick Brown, William & Mary
Jr., RHP, Bristow, Va./Patriot

Brown allowed just one hit over eight shutout innings in William & Mary’s 10-0 victory over Delaware last Friday. The junior right-hander struck out seven and didn’t allow a runner past second base for the second straight game. Brown hasn’t allowed a run over the past 16.1 innings.

CAA BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Aaron Civale, Northeastern
Jr., RHP, East Windsor, Conn./Loomis Chaffee

Civale gave up just two hits over 7.0 shutout innings in Northeastern’s 2-1 triumph over Central Connecticut State last Friday. The junior right-hander struck out a career-high 12 batters and didn’t issue a walk. He sat CCSU down in order four times and allowed just one runner to reach second base.

CAA BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Ryne Ogren, Elon
Fr., SS, Devon, Pa./Conestoga

Ogren repeats as Rookie of the Week after batting .381 (8-for-21) with a homer, five runs scored and seven RBI’s in Elon’s 3-1 week. The freshman had multiple hits in three of the four contests, including going 3-for-6 with a career-high five RBI’s in Elon’s series-clinching 12-4 win at JMU on Sunday. He had no errors in 25 chances at short.

DIAMOND NOTES:

COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON (23-19-1, 7-8 in CAA)

The Cougars lost two-of-three at Towson last weekend. CofC posted a 9-4 victory in the middle game behind a strong pitching effort from Bailey Ober (5-2), who allowed just one run on three hits while fanning 10. It was his second straight start with 10 strikeouts and he has 64 K’s in 66.2 innings this season. The Cougars had 15 hits in the win, with all nine starters having at least one. Danny Wondrack was 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI’s and Clay Hunt  also hit his first career homer. Bradley Jones launched his team-best 10th homer in the series finale. Dupree Hart extended his on-base streak to 28 games before having it snapped on Saturday. Nathan Helvey held TU without a hit until the fifth inning on Friday, but took the loss after allowing three runs in the eighth.

DELAWARE (26-18, 5-10 in CAA)
The Blue Hens split four games last week, rolling past Delaware State (19-8) before taking the finale (4-2) of their CAA series at W&M. Freshman Kevin Mohollen batted .389 (7-18) with seven runs scored and five RBI’s from the leadoff spot last week. Five of his seven hits were for extra bases (3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 homer). Nick Spadafino turned in a strong start in the win over W&M, allowing just one earned run over the first 5.0 innings. Coleman Vila followed by giving up two hits and no earned runs over the next 3.1 frames. Nick Tierno drove in two runs in the victory, including the eventual game-winner. Jordan Glover and Diaz Nardo each had two RBI’s as UD fell 7-4 in Saturday’s first game with W&M. Glover leads the team and is second in the CAA with 47 RBI’s this year.

ELON (22-23, 12-8 in CAA)
The Phoenix won the final two games of their series at JMU last week and have captured 10 of their last 11 CAA contests. Freshman Ryne Ogren batted .381 and drove in seven last week, including a 3-for-6 effort with a career-high five RBI’s in Sunday’s 12-4 win over the Dukes. Tyler McVicar was 3-for-4 on Sunday and has reached base in 17 straight contests. Nick Zammarelli went 3-for-5 and drove in two in Saturday’s 9-2 victory over JMU and was 4-for-5 and scored three times in Friday’s loss. He has six multi-hit outings in the past nine games and has a CAA-best 21 doubles for the season. Jordan Barrett evened his record at 3-3 after limiting the Dukes to one run on seven hits over 7.0 innings on Saturday. Elon finishes CAA play at Delaware this weekend.

HOFSTRA (13-30, 4-13 in CAA)
The Pride dropped three games at first-place UNCW last weekend. Brad Witkowski paced the Hofstra offense once again, batting .500 for the series with a double and three RBI’s. He’s hitting a team-best .299 for the season. David Leiderman batted .385 at UNCW and smacked his fifth home run while Tom Archer posted a .375 average. In just 42 at-bats this season, Max Dolente has recorded three doubles and three homers and is slugging .524. Steven Foster is two hits shy of 100 for his career. Hofstra hosts Northeastern this weekend.

JAMES MADISON (18-26, 8-10 in CAA)
The Dukes went 1-3 last week, but rallied for a 13-10 victory over Elon in Friday’s series opener. Kyle McPherson was 3-for-5 with two RBI’s in the win and Zach Tondi’s two-run single in the eighth snapped a 10-10 tie. Pitcher Aaron Hoover rebounded from a tough start to retire 13 straight batters and Ben Garner struck out three in the ninth to record his seventh save. Outfielder Ky Parrott batted .500 (6-12) for the week with three doubles and seven runs scored. He also drew seven walks to increase his CAA-leading total to 47 and had a .700 on base percentage. Chad Carroll was 3-for-4 vs. Elon on Saturday and has three multi-hit contests in the last six games. Reliever Michael Evans limited Elon to four hits and no earned runs over 4.0 innings on Sunday.

UNCW (31-10, 11-2 in CAA)
The Seahawks solidified their spot atop the CAA standings with a three-game sweep of Hofstra as part of a 4-1 week. UNCW has won a school-record 17 straight home games and has captured its last nine league contests. The Seahawks batted .407 as a team vs. HU and hit five homers in Saturday’ s 10-5 win. Robbie Thorburn batted .650 (13-20) last week with four doubles, three triples and 11 runs scored and was 9-for-12 against the Pride. Nick Feight increased his nation’s-best RBI total to 74 last week, which is 2nd on UNCW’s all-time season chart. Brian Mims had seven hits in the last two games of the series, while Casey Golden homered on Saturday and drove in four on Sunday. Pitcher Ryan Foster improved to 9-1 after limiting HU to one run over 6.0 innings on Friday. Freshman Alex Royalty (7-2) gave up two runs over a career-long 7.0 innings on Saturday and struck out six.

NORTHEASTERN (22-19, 7-7 in CAA)
The Huskies swept a three-game weekend series from Central Connecticut State. Pitcher Aaron Civale was outstanding in Friday’s 2-1 win, giving up just two hits over 7.0 shutout innings and striking out a career-high 12. He leads the CAA with a 1.80 ERA and has fanned 90 in 85.0 innings. Cam Walsh delivered a walk-off, bases loaded single on Friday. Mason Koppens batted .363 (4-11) in the series and had at least one hit in each game. Freshman Charlie McConnell was 2-for-4 with three RBI’s as NU took the final game of the series, 7-6. He had four RBI’s for the weekend and also stole his 18th base. Nolan Lang had a big pinch-hit three-run double as the Huskies rallied for an 8-4 win in Game 2. NU celebrated the 50th anniversary of its 1966 team that advanced to the College World Series on Saturday as many players from the team were on hand.

TOWSON (17-28, 7-8 in CAA)
The Tigers went 3-1 last week, including taking two-of-three from CAA foe CofC. Junior Brady Policelli batted .333 (5-15) with two triples, two homers, four runs scored and eight RBI’s. He ranks seventh in the CAA with a .367 batting average. Cuinn Mullins had a two-run homer in the second that put Towson on top to stay in Sunday’s 7-4 victory. Richie Palacios went 2-for-4 on Sunday and now has 63 hits, which ranks 3rd in the CAA. He leads the league with 31 stolen bases. Pitcher Skyler Morris held the Cougars to one run over 5.2 innings in Friday’s 4-3 win. David Marriggi saved both victories against CofC, throwing one shutout inning on Friday and three scoreless frames on Sunday. Towson faces Maryland on Wednesday and visits William & Mary this weekend.

WILLIAM & MARY (22-22, 11-6 in CAA)
The Tribe split four home games last week, but won two over Delaware to claim their third straight CAA series and remain in second place. Cullen Large batted .444 (8-18) for the week with four doubles, a homer and seven RBI’s. He went 5-for-8 and drove in five in the first two games of the UD series, including a go-ahead homer in the 8th of Saturday’s 7-4 win. Catcher Hunter Smith had at least one hit in all three games of the UD series and knocked in five. On the mound, Nick Brown was sensational again as he gave up just one hit over 8.0 shutout innings and struck out seven in Friday’s 10-0 victory. He has thrown 16.1 consecutive scoreless innings. Bodie Sheehan held the Hens to three hits and two runs over 7.0 innings in Saturday’s opener and Joseph Gaouette finished for his league-leading ninth save.
