CAA MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Daniel Dixon • William & Mary
Sr., G, 6-6, 210 - Great Falls, Va./Langley
Dixon averaged 27.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists as William & Mary went 1-1 on the road last week. The senior guard set a Constant Center opponent record by pouring in a career-high 36 points in the Tribe’s 65-54 win at ODU. He was 11-of-15 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from three, and hit 9-of-10 at the FT line. Dixon followed with a team-high 19 points in a loss at Northeastern. He’s scored double figures in six straight games and is averaging 19.3 ppg over that stretch.
CAA MEN'S BASKETBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Ryan Daly • Delaware
Fr., G, 6-4, 185 - Ardmore, Pa./Archbishop Carroll
Daly averaged 19.0 points and 13.5 rebounds as Delaware split a pair of games last week. The freshman guard posted his first career double-doubles with 18 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Iona, followed by a career-high tying 20 points and a career-best 15 boards in a narrow loss to Hofstra. Daly became the first UD freshman since 1993-94 to record double-doubles in consecutive games.
CONFERENCE NOTES:
ROAD TEAMS GO 3-2 IN CAA OPENERS: Road teams went 3-2 on the opening day of CAA play on New Year’s Eve. Preseason favorite UNCW, College of Charleston and Hofstra all picked up road victories, while Northeastern and James Madison earned wins at home. It was the tip-off of a busy stretch of four CAA games in eight days to start the conference slate before teams settle into a Thursday/Saturday format for the remainder of the season. All 10 teams are back in action today.
UNCW RANKED #15 IN LATEST RPI REPORT: UNCW is ranked #15 in the latest RPI rankings released by Collegiate Basketball News (rpiratings.com) through games of Jan. 1. The Seahawks (12-2) have won nine of their last 10 games. College of Charleston, which is 10-4 overall and has won seven of its last eight games, is #56 in the RPI, while Towson is #97 and Northeastern has moved up to #105 after extending its win streak to four. Only nine other conferences (American, ACC, Atlantic 10, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Mountain West, Pac 12 and SEC) have four schools in the top 105 of the RPI. The CAA is ranked #11 among the nation’s 32 Division I leagues.
CAA LEADS THE NATION IN ROAD VICTORIES: CAA teams have won 27 true road games and are 9-8 on neutral courts against non-conference foes this season. The 27 road wins are the most of any Division I conference. Eight CAA teams recorded multiple road victories in non-conference play, led by UNCW, Northeastern and Drexel with four each.
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS: CAA teams concluded regular-season non-conference play with a combined 72-55 record. Eight of the league’s 10 teams posted .500 or better overall records against non-league foes.
UNCW RECEIVES VOTE IN AP TOP 25 POLL: For the second week in a row, UNCW was among others receiving votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The Seahawks (12-2) got three points in the Dec. 26 poll and picked up one point this week.
College of Charleston
• Opened CAA play with a 66-54 victory at Elon. Have won 7 of their last 8 games.
• Jarrell Brantley scored a season-high 19 points and grabbed 9 rebounds at Elon. He’s reached double figures in 26 of his past 27 games and ranks 3rd in the CAA in rebounding with a team-high 7.9 rpg.
• Joe Chealey added 10 points and 6 assists at Elon. He’s tallied double figures nine times and is 8th in the CAA in assists (3.1 apg).
• Freshman Grant Riller chipped in 9 points at Elon. He’s third on the team in scoring (10.1 ppg) and is shooting 81.3% at the FT line.
• Freshman Chevez Goodwin had 8 points and a career-high 6 boards at Elon.
• CofC limited Elon to 38.9% FG shooting, including 3-of-20 from 3-point range. CofC has held 12 of its 14 foes under 70 points this season and leads the CAA and ranks 11th nationally in in scoring defense (59.5 ppg).
• The Cougars lead the CAA and rank 2nd nationally in 3-point FG defense (27.0%).
Delaware
• Split a pair of home games last week, beating Iona 63-54 but losing 58-56 to Hofstra. UD is 5-1 at home this season.
• Ryan Daly posted double-doubles vs. Iona (18 pts/12 reb) and Hofstra (career-high 20 pts/15 reb), which were the first of his career. He’s scored double figures in 6 straight games and tops UD in both scoring (12.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.2 rpg) for the year.
• Anthony Mosley had 14 points and 6 rebounds vs. Iona and 13 points vs. Hofstra. He’s averaging 11.5 ppg and ranks 2nd in the CAA in steals (1.6 spg).
• Darian Bryant scored 11 points on 5-of-8 FG shooting and had a team-best 4 assists vs. Iona. It was his first game in double digits since Nov. 27.
• Chivarsky Corbett (9.0 ppg) sat out the Iona game and played just 9 minutes vs. Hofstra due to a leg injury.
• UD out-rebounded Iona 40-34 and Hofstra 41-36. The Hens rank third in the league in rebound margin (+5.6 rpg).
Drexel
• Dropped road games at Penn (75-67) and James Madison (78-67) last week.
• Miles Overton scored a career-high 19 points at Penn and followed with a team-best 14 points at JMU. He made eight 3-pointers in the two games.
• Rodney Williams had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks at Penn and posted his 2nd double-double (12 pts/11 reb) at JMU. He’s 4th in the CAA in scoring (16.5 ppg) and 8th in rebounding (6.6 rpg).
• Kurk Lee had 9 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists at Penn and scored 13 points at JMU. Lee is 7th in the CAA in scoring (14.7 ppg) and 3rd in assists (5.2 apg).
• Kari Jonsson (10.3 ppg) is 2nd in the CAA with 2.4 threes per game and is shooting 43.6% from beyond the arc.
• Austin Williams scored 11 points on 5-of-5 FG shooting and grabbed 8 boards at Penn.
• Sammy Mojica scored 13 points at JMU and grabbed 9 rebounds at Penn. He’s averaging 10.5 ppg and 6.2 rpg for the season.
Elon
• Went 1-1 at home last week, beating Central Penn (89-60) but losing to CofC (66-54).
• Brian Dawkins had 12 points vs. CofC and 11 points vs. Central Penn. He’s tallied double digits in 5 straight games and is averaging 12.7 ppg. Dakwins is shooting 55.7% from the floor, including 20-of-34 (58.8%) from 3.
• Tyler Seibring scored a team-high 14 points with 7 rebounds vs. CofC and had 18 points and 7 boards vs. CPU. He’s scored double digits nine times and is grabbing 6.4 rpg.
• Dmitri Thompson scored a season-high 15 points vs. CPU and had 13 points on 6-8 FG shooting vs. CofC. He matched his career-high with 9 rebounds in each game.
• Steven Santa Ana drained four treys and scored 18 points vs. CPU. He’s tallied double digits in five of his past six games.
• Elon hit just 3 treys vs. CofC after making at least seven 3-pointers in its first 13 games. The Phoenix average 9.4 treys per game.
• Elon has held 3 of its last 4 opponents to under 40% field goal shooting.
Hofstra
• Edged Delaware 58-56 in their CAA opener. Have won 7 of their last 9 games.
• Ty Greer tied his career high with 17 points at UD and added 7 rebounds.
• Justin Wright-Foreman scored 15 points at UD, including hitting two critical FT’s with 36 seconds to go. He’s averaging 17.7 ppg over his last three games.
• Rokas Gustys grabbed 11 rebounds at UD, which was his 10th game with double-digit boards. He leads the nation in rebounding with 13.4 rpg and has 5 double-doubles.
• Eli Pemberton added 11 points at Delaware. He’s reached double digits 11 times and ranks 9th in the league in scoring (14.2 ppg).
• Deron Powers had 9 points and 5 assists at UD, but saw his 10-game double-figure scoring streak end. He ranks fourth in the CAA in assists (4.9 apg) is avearging 13.3 ppg.
• Hofstra has made 10 or more threes in eight games and is shooting a league-best 39.0% from beyond the arc.
James Madison
• Won consecutive games for the first time this season, beating Eastern Mennonite (82-65) and Drexel (78-67) last week.
• Jackson Kent averaged 23.5 ppg last week, including a career-high 30 points on 12-17 FG shooting vs. Drexel. He leads JMU in scoring (13.2 ppg) and is 2nd in assists (34) and rebounding (4.8 rpg).
• Paulius Satkus scored a career-high 22 points vs. EMU and 14 points against DU. He was 14-of-19 (73.7%) from the floor and added 9 rebounds and 4 blocks.
• Ramone Snowden contributed 12 points and 4 assists vs. EMU and grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds vs. Drexel.
• JMU shot a season-high 55.6% from the floor vs. DU, including 60.7% in the 2nd half.
• Joey McLean contributed 13 points and 4 steals in the Drexel win.
• JMU has beaten 13 of its 14 opponents on the glass and ranks 2nd in the CAA in rebound margin (+5.9 rpg) for the year.
UNCW
• Fell 87-73 at Clemson, but rebounded for a 76-67 victory at Towson. Have won 9 of their last 10 games.
• Denzel Ingram scored a team-best 20 points at CU and a game-high 22 points at TU. He made 9 threes over the two games and had 6 assists in each. Ingram is averaging 14.1 ppg, leads the CAA with 2.9 treys per game and ranks 2nd in assists (5.7 apg).
• C.J. Bryce had 11 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists at TU and added 18 points at CU. He’s tallied double figures in 10 straight games and is 2nd in the CAA with 17.6 ppg.
• Devontae Cacok averaged 15.5 ppg on 14-of-17 FG shooting last week. He’s 31-of-34 from the floor over the last 5 games and ranks 2nd in Div. I in FG percentage (81.4%). He’s 2nd in the CAA in rebounding (8.9 rpg).
• Chris Flemmings has reached double digits in 16 of his last 19 games and ranks 5th in the CAA with 15.7 ppg.
• Guard Ambrose Mosely scored all 15 of his points in the second half at Towson.
Northeastern
• On a season-best 4-game win streak after beating William & Mary (84-64) Saturday.
• T.J. Williams had 16 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists vs. W&M and went over 1,000 points for his career. He’s scored double digits in all 13 games, including eight 20+-point efforts. He leads the CAA in scoring (21.1 ppg) and assists (5.8 apg).
• Alex Murphy tied a career-high with 24 points vs. W&M. He was 9-of-13 from the floor, including a career-best 5-of-6 from three. He’s shooting 53.3% from the floor.
• Devon Begley scored a career-high 21 points vs. W&M, hitting 8-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-6 from 3. He also contributed 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
• Anthony Green just missed a double-double vs. W&M with a career-high 13 points and a team-best 9 rebounds.
• NU shot 57.1% from the floor against W&M.
• All five Northeastern losses this season have been by six points or less.
Towson
• Dropped a 76-67 decision to UNCW in their CAA opener last Saturday.
• John Davis posted his 5th double-double of the year and the 20th of his career with team-highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds vs. UNCW. He’s 5th in the CAA with 7.5 rpg.
• Davis became the 10th player in Towson history to eclipse 600 career rebounds (613) against UNCW.
• Mike Morsell hit 3-of-5 treys and added 13 points vs UNCW. He’s reached double figures in seven straight games and is 3rd in the CAA with 17.3 ppg.
• DeShaun Morman chipped in 11 points vs. UNCW and is averaging 11.6 ppg over the past nine games.
• Towson beat UNCW 43-33 on the glass and has out-rebounded 30 of its last 33 foes. The Tigers top the CAA and are 21st in Div. I in rebound margin (+7.9 rpg).
• Towson ranks 2nd in the CAA in FG percentage defense (39.8%) and third in scoring defense (67.8 ppg).
William & Mary
• Split a pair of road games last week, beating Old Dominion (65-54) but falling at Northeastern (84-64).
• Daniel Dixon scored a career-high 36 points at ODU, hitting 11-of-15 from the floor, 5-of-7 from 3 and 9-of-10 at the line. It was the most points by an ODU foe at the Constant Center. Dixon added a team-high 19 points at NU and has scored double figures in 6 straight games.
• Jack Whitman scored 15 points on 6-of-7 FG shooting at NU. He’s averaging 10.8 ppg on 62.9% FG shooting for the season.
• Omar Prewitt has topped the 20-point mark in four of his past eight contests and is averaging 13.4 ppg for the season.
• Connor Burchfield is 12-of-24 from three in the past five games and is shooting 47.8% for the year from beyond the arc.
• W&M made nine treys in the win at ODU and ranks 2nd in the CAA with 9.3 threes per game.
