RICHMOND, Va. (October 30, 2017) – CAA Football has announced its weekly award winners for Week 9 of the 2017 season. Earning honors were Elon freshman quarterback Davis Cheek, Rhode Island sophomore defensive tackle Brandon Ginnetti, James Madison junior cornerback Rashad Robinson, Maine junior kicker Brandon Briggs, Elon freshman wide receiver Kortez Weeks and Towson freshman quarterback Ryan Stover.
CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Davis Cheek, Fr., QB, Elon (Matthews, N.C./Butler)
Cheek completed 24-of-35 passes for a career-high 357 yards and two touchdowns in Elon’s 19-14 road win at No. 13 Villanova. The freshman quarterback engineered the Phoenix’s fourth fourth-quarter comeback of the season by throwing a 21-yard TD pass with 10:51 to go. Elon generated 474 yards of offense against a VU defense that ranked in the top 10 nationally in total and scoring defense.
CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Brandon Ginnetti, So., DT, Rhode Island (East Haven, Conn./Cheshire Academy)
Ginnetti recorded five tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss, and made three sacks in Rhode Island’s 31-14 victory at UAlbany. It was the first three-sack performance by a Rams’ player since 2001. URI held the Great Danes to just 125 total yards in the game, including -7 yards rushing.
CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Rashad Robinson, Jr., CB, James Madison (Richmond, Va./Hermitage)
Robinson made three tackles and returned a key interception 82 yards for a TD in James Madison’s 21-0 shutout of New Hampshire. The interception, which was Robinson’s CAA-best fifth of the season, was the third-longest return in JMU history and stopped a UNH drive into the red zone. The Dukes held UNH to a season-low 193 total yards and became the first FCS team since 2013 to keep them scoreless.
CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Brandon Briggs, Jr., PK, Maine (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy)
Briggs was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals, including a career-long 43-yarder, in Maine’s 23-6 triumph over William & Mary. The 43-yard field goal was the longest for a Black Bears’ kicker since 2015. Briggs has converted seven straight field goal attempts and is 7-for-8 on the season.
CAA Football Rookie of the Week
Kortez Weeks, Fr., WR, Elon (Mt. Ulla, N.C./West Rowan)
Weeks set career-highs with 11 receptions for 205 yards in Elon’s 19-14 victory at Villanova. He became just the third player in Phoenix history to top the 200-yard mark in a game and the yardage total was the 7
th-highest in school history.
CAA Football Rookie of the Week
Ryan Stover, Fr., QB, Towson (Oreland, Pa./Upper Dublin)
Stover completed 20-of-32 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-winning 14-yard TD pass with 35 seconds to go, to lead Towson past No. 23 Delaware, 18-17. The freshman quarterback added a team-high 56 yards rushing on just 8 carries. It was his second game-winning drive of the year.
