Rob Washburn
It was another exciting Saturday around CAA Football as Villanova, Elon, Richmond and Delaware picked up victories.
Villanova's defense turned in a dominant effort as the Wildcats (4-2, 2-1) blanked Maine, 31-0. VU held Maine (1-3, 0-3) to 227 total yards, including just 16 on the ground, and posted its second shuout of the season. The Wildcats also forced six turnovers, with freshman Jaquan Amos tying a FCS record by returning a fumble 99 yards for a touchdown. Offensively, VU freshman quarterback Jack Schetelich passed for one TD and ran for another in his first collegiate start.
Elon (5-1, 3-0) extended its winning streak to five by holding off William & Mary, 25-17. The Phoenix, who are off to their best start since 2009, built a 23-3 halftime lead behind a pair of touchdown runs from Malcolm Summers (81 yards). W&M (2-3, 0-2) battled back following a TD pass from Brandon Battle and a scoring run from Nate Evans, but Elon's Warren Messer forced a safety late in the fourth quarter to help Elon secure the victory.
Richmond (3-2, 2-1) rallied for a thrilling 41-38 double-overtime victory over UAlbany (3-3, 1-2). The Great Danes took a 31-21 advantage early in the fourth quarter on a 39-yard TD pass from Will Brunson to Jerod Diggs, but the Spiders forced overtime on a 3-yard TD pass from Kyle Lauletta to Dejon Brissett with 1:27 left in regulation. Both teams scored TD's in the first overtime session, but UAlbany's field goal was blocked in the second overtime and the Spiders got a game-winning 34-yard field goal from Griffin Trau. Lauletta threw for 353 yards and 3 TD's and also ran for a score on a day when he became UR's all-time leader in touchdown passes. Brunson passed for a career-high 339 yards and 4 TD's for UAlbany.
Delaware (3-2, 1-1) overcame a 13-point halftime deficit and earned a 24-20 triumph at Stony Brook (4-2, 3-1) for its first CAA victory of the season. The Seawolves built a 20-7 halftime lead as Joe Carbone (272 yards) connected on a pair of touchdown passes to Ray Bolden (8 rec., 136 yds). The Blue Hens got a 50-yard field goal from Frank Raggo and then cut the gap to three late in the third quarter after Malcolm Butler returned a fumble 45 yards for a score. UD got the game-winning score early in the fourth quarter as Kani Kane capped an 80-yard drive with a 6-yard TD run.
