HARRISONBURG, Va. (November 12, 2017) – CAA Player of the Year
Antonio Bustamante notched a hat trick to power fifth-seeded William & Mary to a 4-2 victory over second-seeded UNCW and help the Tribe capture the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men's Soccer Championship title this afternoon at Sentara Park. William & Mary, which is unbeaten in its last ten matches, secured an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament and becomes the first No. 5 seed to win as title since 2004.
Bustamante, the CAA Championship Most Outstanding Performer, scored seven goals over three tournament games as William & Mary (11-4-5) upset three teams to capture their first CAA title since 2010 and their eighth title overall.
UNCW (11-7-0) got on the board in the 25th minute as
Julio Moncada blasted in a free kick from just outside the penalty area for his fifth goal of the season. UNCW drew a foul to set up the free kick which Moncada sent into the top far corner. William & Mary had a chance in the 40th minute as rookie
Sam Golan got his head on a free ball but the shot sailed wide. The score would hold at 1-0 at the break.
In the second half, William & Mary came out firing. Bustamante had a great look at 52:38 but his shot was blocked by the UNCW defense. Just over a minute later,
Justin Ngoh broke free at the top of the box and scooted one past a diving
Ryan Cretens. Bustamante put the Tribe on top, 2-1, at 65:24 sending home a feed from
Ryder Bell. It was Bell’s second assist of the game and tenth of the season while it was Bustamante’s 13th goal of the year.
The Tribe pushed its lead to two goals in the 76th minute as Bustamante and
Graham Guidry played a little give-and-go for Bustamante’s second of the day. Bustamante wasn’t done, scoring his third of the day in the 78th minute, this time off a pass from
William Eskay to make it 4-1. UNCW got one of the goals back with 2.8 seconds remaining as
Matt Gianfortone scored his first goal of the year.
