Stony Brook, UNH Advance In FCS Playoffs

Stony Brook rolled past Lehigh, 59-29, and New Hampshire blanked Central Connecticut State, 14-0, on Saturday to advance to the second round of the NCAA FCS playoffs, while Elon dropped a 28-27 heartbreaker to Furman.
The Seawolves travel to fellow CAA Football member James Madison at 2 p.m. next Saturday, while the Wildcats visit Central Arkansas at 3 p.m.

Stony Brook (10-2) piled up 622 yards of total offense and got touchdowns from six different players in a 59-29 victory over Lehigh. Donald Liotine ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries and Sherman Alston Jr., added 87 yards and a TD on five attempts to pace a Seawolves' rushing attack that picked up 354 yards. Quarterback Joe Carbone also had a big day through the air, completing 13-of-29 passes for 268 yards and two TD's, including a 76-yard strike to Harrison Jackson. Defensively, SBU's Gavin Heslop made 12 tackles and Chris Cooper had 11 stops.

Linebackers Quinlen Dean and Jared Kuehl led a strong effort from the New Hampshire defense as the Wildcats (8-4) shut out Central Connecticut State, 14-0. It was the first shutout win since 2010 for UNH, which limited CCSU to 248 total yards and forced four turnovers. Dean recorded 12 tackles, including three for loss, and had an interception, while Kuehl added seven stops, an interception and a fumble recovery. Offensively, quarterback Trevor Knight completed 26-of-42 passes for 299 yards, including a 41-yard TD pass to Nick Lorden. Malik Love made a team-high 10 receptions for 123 yards.
Furman 28, Elon 27

Running back De'Sean McNair rushed for 101 yards and three touchdowns, but Elon (8-4) suffered a 28-27 setback to Furman. In a back-and-forth game, McNair's 3-yard TD run gave the Phoenix a 21-14 advantage midway through the third quarter. The Paladins responded with a pair of scores to go up 28-21 early in the fourth quarter, but McNair answered with a 28-yard TD run. However, the extra point was blocked, which proved to be the difference in the contest. Elon quarterback Davis Cheek threw for 201 yards and a TD. Warren Messer recorded a team-best 10 tackles and had two quarterback hurries.
