RICHMOND, Va. (November 9, 2017) – College of William & Mary junior midfielder
Antonio Bustamante was named the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men’s Soccer Player of the Year to headline the league’s postseason awards. College of Charleston senior back
Leland Archer was named the CAA Defender of the Year while UNCW defender
Hjalmar Ekdal was named the CAA Rookie of the Year. James Madison University’s
Tom Foley was the unanimous selection for CAA Coach of the Year.
Bustamante, an All-CAA First Team selection for the second consecutive season, currently leads the CAA in goals (12) and points (29). Entering Friday's semifinals, he’s ranked 14th nationally in goals and 11th in points. In the CAA Championship Quarterfinals, Bustamante set a tournament record with four goals and eight points and tied the league’s single game record. Bustamante has garnered numerous accolades this season, including CAA Preseason Player of the Year honors, two CAA Player of the Week awards, and was named to the initial MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Bustamante is the Tribe’s first CAA Player of the Year since 2009 when Andrew Hoxie picked up the honor and just the sixth overall.
Archer has been one of the top defenders in the CAA this season. The All-CAA First Team selection has anchored a defense that has yielded just 16 goals in 17 games. Archer has the ability to contribute offensively as well, tallying five goals on the year, including both CofC goals in the CAA Championship Quarterfinals. He is the first Cougar to earn a major postseason honor.
Ekdal, who landed a spot on the All-CAA First Team and the CAA All-Rookie Team, is the second Seahawk in the last three years to earn Rookie of the Year honors. Ekdal started all 16 games for the UNCW defensive unit and added two goals. During the season, he was named the CAA Player of the Week and to the Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News Teams of the Week as well as CAA Rookie of the Week.
Foley, in his third year at the helm of the Dukes, guided James Madison to a 9-6-3 overall record, a 5-1-2 mark in league play, and the 2017 CAA Regular Season Championship. The top-seeded Dukes closed out the regular season by winning five of its last six matches to clinch a tournament berth for the first time since 2015 and the No. 1 seed for the first time since 2011. James Madison is second only to William & Mary in goals (31), assists (22) and points (84) this season.
Seven of the nine CAA squads were represented on the All-CAA First Team. At forward, was UNCW sophomore
