RICHMOND, Va. (February 1, 2017) – The CAA has recognized six men’s and women’s tennis players for outstanding performances last week.
William & Mary senior
Aidan Talcott (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) and the Drexel duo of junior
Hamza Laalej (Meknes, Morocco) and freshman
Youssef Lahlou (Casablanca, Morocco) earned CAA men’s tennis honors. Receiving accolades on the women’s side were William & Mary sophomore
Lauren Goodman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and the James Madison tandem of sophomore
Emma Petersen (Miami, Fla.) and senior
Rebecca Harris (Charlotte, N.C.).
Talcott was selected as the CAA men’s tennis Player of the Week after posting a 3-1 record at No. 1 singles as William & Mary reeled off consecutive team wins over Brown, Boston College and Navy. The senior came from behind to defeat Brown’s Peter Tarwid, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 as the Tribe edged the Bears’ 4-3. He topped BC’s Aidan McNulty, 6-3, 6-3 in a 5-2 triumph over the Eagles and beat Navy’s Thomas Pecor, 6-0, 6-4, in a 6-1 victory over the Midshipmen. Talcott is currently ranked No. 72 nationally in singles. He’s also 3-1 at No. 1 doubles with partner Ryan Newman.
Laalej and Lahlou were honored as the CAA men’s Doubles Team of the Week after going 2-0 at No. 2 doubles in Drexel’s matches against Georgetown and Morgan State. The duo helped the Dragons clinch the doubles point versus the Hoyas with a 6-4 victory over GU’s Yannik Mahlangu and Peter Beatty. They followed with a 6-1 win over MSU’s Lucas Krusinski and Arjun Ramakrishnan in the Dragons’ 4-0 team triumph.
Goodman was named the CAA women’s tennis Player of the Week after sweeping her opening three matches of the dual match season at No. 3 singles. The sophomore beat Richmond’s Brittany Boys, 6-2, 6-2, in the Tribe’s 6-1 win over Richmond, and then defeated Elon’s Maria Paraja, 6-2, 6-1, as W&M opened CAA play with a 7-0 victory over the Phoenix. During the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, Goodman was leading 34
th-ranked Chalena Scholl of Duke, 2-1 in the third set when the match was abandoned with the team results decided. She closed out the weekend by knocking off Tulsa’s Mahitha Dadireddy, 6-4, 6-3. She and partner Maria Faure also earned two wins at No. 1 doubles.
Petersen and Harris were chosen as the CAA women’s Doubles Team of the Week after going 2-0 at No. 2 doubles in JMU’s victories over Radford and Penn State. The duo cruised past RU’s Karlie Pope and Claire Nguyen, 6-1, 6-2, as the Dukes blanked the Highlanders, 7-0. They followed by pulling out a 6-4 win over PSU’s Bennett Dunn and Jacqueline Zuhse, which clinched the crucial doubles point as JMU edged the Nittany Lions, 4-3.
