RICHMOND, Va. (February 21, 2017) – No. 12/13 Towson University’s
Jon Mazza was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week while Hofstra University’s
Ryan Tierney was named the CAA Rookie of the Week.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Jon Mazza • No. 12/13 Towson University
Sophomore | Attack | Davidsonville, Md./The Calverton School
In his first-ever start at attack, Jon Mazza had a career day, dropping six goals on just 10 shots in the No. 12 Tigers' 13-5 opening day victory at Mount St. Mary's. Mazza is the first Towson player to record a "sock trick" on the road since Thomas DeNapoli did the same against Drexel on April 20, 2013. Mazza's six goals included a natural hat trick to open the scoring in the second quarter, including both of the Tigers' extra-man goals. Mazza also added back-to-back goals in the third quarter as Towson won its fourth-straight lid lifter while improving head coach Shawn Nadelen to 5-1 in season openers. Mazza's final goal of the game was Towson's 13th, tying the team's high-water mark against Mount St. Mary's in the Nadelen Era (2012).
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Ryan Tierney • Hofstra University
Freshman | Attack | Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa
Rookie attackman Ryan Tierney began his Hofstra career with a three-goal and one assist performance in an 11-9 victory over Monmouth. Tierney, the son of Pride Head Coach Seth Tierney, scored on his first shot of the game and added goals in the second and third quarters as well. Tierney also set up one Josh Byrne’s three goals on the day to finish with four points in his debut.
