Senior co-captain Will Hirschmann was a key catalyst for Delaware’s historic 13-9 win over No. 1 Rutgers on Saturday. He notched first career hat trick with three goals on nine shots. The middie potted what proved to be the game-winning goal on a tally with 12:29 left to play that began a four-goal run by Delaware after Rutgers had cut the lead to 9-8. Rookie Matt DeLuca was brilliant in the nets once again for the Blue Hens and played a key part in Delaware’s upset of No. 1 Rutgers. DeLuca turned back a career-high 19 shots against the Scarlets Knights, the highest save total by a UD netminder since Tommy Scherr had 19 vs. Lehigh in 2008. He also had also had a ground ball in the win. He set the tone with six saves in the first quarter as UD jumped out to a 6-1 lead and finished with five saves in the final quarter when UD held the Scarlet Knights to just two goals. The Hens have now won six of their last seven games and DeLuca is 6-1 during that span since taking over the starting spot.
