CAA MEN'S LACROSSE WEEKLY REPORT - APRIL 24

RICHMOND, Va. (April 24, 2017) – Drexel University senior Cole Shafer and Hofstra University senior Josh Byrne were named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week while Fairfield’s Travis Ford picked up CAA Rookie of the Week honors.

Drexel senior Cole Shafer scored a career-high six goals and handed out an assist as Drexel defeated Delaware, 14-9, to clinch a spot in CAA Championship. Shafer had five second half goals to bring his career total to 117 and move into sole possession of fourth place all-time in league history. This season, Shafer potted 33 goals and collected 40 points.

Hofstra senior Josh Byrne tallied a game-high five goals, three assists and eight points in the Pride's 15-8 victory over UMass. He scored twice in both the first and second quarters, and once in the fourth while posting an assist in the first and two in the second quarter. He now has nine multi-goal games, seven hat-tricks and two games with five or more goals this season. He also extended his consecutive games points streak to 17 and goals streak to eight. Byrne also went over the 100-point mark in his short Hofstra career on a second quarter assist. His 35 goals this year are the most since Jay Card's 35 in 2009 while his 59 points are the most since Chris Unterstein's 81 in 2006. This is the third CAA Player of the Week honor for Byrne this season.

Fairfield middie Travis Ford had two goals, including what stood up as the game-winner in the Stags' upset of No. 15 Towson. Ford gave Fairfield an early 3-1 lead by closing out the first quarter with a goal. He struck again with 4:15 left in the fourth quarter as his unassisted tally gave the Stags a 9-5 lead. It was a crucial goal as the Tigers cut into the lead with three straight goals. After his pair of markers on Saturday, Ford has 19 goals on the year and leads the Stags in both game-winning goals (3) and man-up goals (5). This is the second CAA Rookie of the Week honor for Ford.
