RICHMOND, Va. (April 26, 2017) – Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner Joe D’Antonio has announced the hiring of Shawn Murphy as Associate Commissioner for Men’s Basketball at the CAA.
Murphy has spent the past 15 years working at the BIG EAST Conference, where he has served as Assistant Commissioner for Men’s Basketball Operations since 2013.
“I am extremely pleased that Shawn has accepted our offer to join the CAA staff, and we are very fortunate to have him as part of our team,” D’Antonio said. “Shawn’s experience and knowledge in so many facets of college men’s basketball will be a tremendous asset to the administrators, coaches and student-athletes of the CAA. I look forward to working closely with him to grow the CAA’s men’s basketball brand and best position our Conference for success in the future.”
Murphy was responsible for all regular-season game operations at the BIG EAST and served as the tournament manager for the BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Championship at Madison Square Garden. Murphy was in charge of developing the conference’s men’s basketball schedule each year and was the league’s liaison to FOX Sports for scheduling and television production elements. He worked closely with the conference’s Coordinator of Officials, John Cahill, to make replacement assignments and review controversial calls.
Along with his work at the BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Championship, Murphy served as the tournament manager for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship East Regional in 2014 and 2017. He directed all game operations, worked to develop a local organizing committee in New York City, and appointed and oversaw a staff or more than 100 volunteers.
“Shawn Murphy is a terrific hire for the Colonial Athletic Association,” said Dan Gavitt, Senior Vice President of Basketball at the NCAA. “He brings to the CAA a wealth of experience in every aspect of men’s basketball administration – communication with coaches, scheduling, television, tournament management, officiating, game operations, and playing rules among others. I had the good fortune of working closely with Shawn for seven years at the BIG EAST Conference. He is an outstanding young leader in our game and will serve the CAA membership well in men’s basketball. Shawn has the great respect of everyone at the NCAA having served as the tournament manager for the East Regional at Madison Square Garden in March for the second time. Congratulations to Commissioner Joe D’Antonio on making an excellent choice in Shawn Murphy."
Murphy will begin his position at the CAA on May 8. He can be followed @MurphyCAAMBB on Twitter.
“I am honored and excited to be appointed to this position by Commissioner D'Antonio,” Murphy said. “I am looking forward to working closely with the CAA Directors of Athletics and men's basketball coaches to nurture, enhance and elevate one of the proudest basketball brands in all of college athletics.”
