Kyle Jackson, Elon

Jackson batted .467 (7-15) with two doubles, four homers, six runs scored and 14 RBI’s in Elon’s 4-0 week. The senior outfielder went deep twice and drove in a season-high five runs in a victory over High Point last Tuesday, had a homer and four RBI’s as the Phoenix beat James Madison, 7-1, on Friday and smacked his first career grand slam in Saturday’s 9-2 triumph over the Dukes. Jackson, who slugged 1.400 for the week, has reached base safely in 13 straight games. He also had two outfield assists last week. Jackson was named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball.
CAA BASEBALL Co-PITCHER AND ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Kyle Brnovich, Elon
Fr., RHP, Milton, Ga./Kings Ridge Christian
Brnovich threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout as Elon blanked James Madison, 3-0, on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep. It was the first career complete game for the freshman right-hander, who took a no-hitter into the seventh. Brnovich (2-2) struck out six, which was his fifth straight game with at least 6 K’s. He leads the CAA in opponent batting average (.173) and ranks second in ERA (2.50) for the season.

Sisk tossed 6.2 scoreless innings in College of Charleston’s 2-0 victory over UNCW on Saturday. The sophomore left-hander, who improved his record to 3-0 with a team-best 3.03 ERA, scattered six hits and didn’t allow a runner past second base while striking out two. He combined with Tucker White on CofC’s first shutout since last May as the Cougars recorded a three-game series sweep over the Seahawks.
DIAMOND NOTES:
COL. OF CHARLESTON (13-15, 5-1 in CAA)
The Cougars have won five straight CAA games and are tied for first at 5-1 following a sweep of preseason favorite UNCW. Dupree Hart batted .462 (6-13) with six runs scored last week. He had multiple hits in three of CofC’s four games and also was part of the Cougars’ first triple play since 2004 on Sunday. Logan McRae drove in five runs, including his second grand slam of the year, in Friday’s 8-7 victory. He’s batting .354 with 8 homers and a CAA-best 31 RBI’s for the season. Erven Roper was 2-for-4 with three RBI’s in Sunday’s 7-6 win. The Cougars posted their first shutout of the season on Saturday as Evan Sisk scattered six hits over 6.2 innings and Tucker White didn’t allow a hit and fanned six over the final 2.1 frames. Starter Nathan Ocker threw a career-best 6.2 innings and struck out nine to pick up his first win on Friday.
DELAWARE (15-10, 3-3 in CAA)
The Blue Hens had a 3-1 week, capped by a dramatic CAA series win over William & Mary. UD overcame a 4-0 eighth-inning deficit to edge the Tribe, 5-4, in 11 innings on Sunday. Kevin Mohollen tied the game with an RBI triple in the 9th and then drove in the winning run with a single in the 11th. He batted .529 (9-17) for the week to raise his season average to .396. Diaz Nardo pushed his hitting streak to 12 games. Doug Trimble had his hitting streak snapped at 17 games but still tops the CAA with a .398 batting average, UD scored 20 unanswered runs in a 21-6 victory over Rider last Wednesday in the Liberty Bell Classic. Reliever Burk FitzPatrick tossed 4.0 shutout innings to get the win on Sunday vs W&M, including escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the eighth.
ELON (15-13, 5-1 in CAA)
The Phoenix went 4-0 last week, highlighted by a three-game sweep of JMU that kept them tied atop the CAA standings at 5-1. Elon out-scored the Dukes, 19-3. Outfielder Kyle Jackson had a huge week offensively, batting .467 with two doubles, four homers and 14 RBI’s. He went deep twice and drove in five in a 14-8 win over High Point, homered with four RBI in the opener vs. JMU and belted his first career grand slam against JMU on Saturday. James Venuto also had a three-run, first-inning homer on Saturday. On the mound, freshman Kyle Brnovich threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout in Sunday’s 3-0 triumph. Jordan Barrett gave up just one run over 6.2 innings and fanned 11 on Saturday. Ryan Conroy tossed 5.0 shutout frames on Friday to up his record to 4-1. George Kirby got the save for Conroy after striking out seven in four innings.
HOFSTRA (7-18, 1-2 in CAA)
The Pride beat LIU Post, 3-1, before losing a pair of weekend contests to No. 5 St. John’s (4-1, 14-3). Chris Weiss turned in a solid week on the mound, striking out seven over 5.0 innings of work in two appearances. He saved the LIU Post game and held opposing batters to .071 average. Offensively, Vito Friscia batted .400 for the week, while Steven Foster and Brad Witkowski were each 4-for-11. Friscia was 3-for-4 with an RBI double against LIU Post and Witkowski went 3-for-3. Nick Bottari’s RBI single capped a three-run fifth inning at SJU on Sunday that put the Pride ahead 3-2. Hofstra plays at Monmouth on Tuesday and then returns home for a CAA series against Towson.
JAMES MADISON (16-10, 2-4 in CAA)
The Dukes dropped all four games last week, including a series sweep at league foe Elon. JMU scored just four runs in the four games, but got a strong pitching performance on Sunday. Junior Josh Silvestri gave up only one hit over 7.0 shutout innings at Elon, but didn’t get a decision in a 3-0 loss. Colton Harlow tossed 5.0 shutout frames on Saturday after allowing three first-inning runs. Ky Parrott was 4-for-13 last week and drew four walks. Zach Tondi belted his seventh homer of the season on Saturday. The Dukes’ Adam Sisk leads the CAA in on base percentage (.488), while Brett Johnson leads the league in slugging (.718). The Dukes open a six-game homestand against George Mason and face first-place CofC over the weekend.
UNCW (11-15, 2-4 in CAA)
The Seahawks were 0-4 last week, including three losses by a total of four runs in their CAA series at College of Charleston. Catcher Ryan Jeffers tied a school record with three homers and drove in five and Robbie Thorburn went 3-for-3 with a pair of solo shots in UNCW’s 8-7 setback at CofC last Friday. Nick Feight extended his hitting streak to 10 games over the weekend, while Brian Mims pushed his on-base streak to 21 games. Terence Connelly hit a two-run single that put UNCW ahead 6-5 in the 8th on Sunday. Sophomore pitcher Logan Beehler gave up just two runs on five hits over a career-long 7.1 innings on Saturday at CofC. Reliever Austin Easter has fanned seven over 5.2 innings in his last four appearances. UNCW has five non-conference contests this week.
NORTHEASTERN (11-14, 4-2 in CAA)
The Huskies vaulted into third place in the CAA standings after a three-game sweep at Towson over the weekend. Pat Madigan batted .417 (5-12) and drove in five in the TU series. He belted a pair of homers in Saturday’s second game and delivered a two-run single in the 8th as the Huskies rallied for a 5-3 victory on Sunday. Nick Fanneron’s grand slam was the big hit in a 5-2 win in Game 1 at Towson. Mason Koppens had two hits in all three games of the series. Brian Christian improved to 3-0 after striking out a career-high 11 batters over 7.0 innings on Sunday. Mike Fitzgerald (3-1) retired 14 of the first 15 batters he faced in Saturday’s opener and gave up just two runs in 7.0 innings of work while fanning eight. David Stiehl threw a career-high 6.0 innings in his first start in Saturday’s second game and picked up the win.
TOWSON (9-14, 0-3 in CAA)
The Tigers had a 1-4 week, including three losses to Northeastern to open CAA play. Towson rallied past Coppin State 7-5 last Wednesday as Logan Burke delivered a game-winning two-run single in the 8th. Colin Gimblet had a solid series against NU, smacking a two-run homer in the opener, scoring a pair of runs in Game 2 and going 2-for-4 in Sunday’s finale. Cuinn Mullins was 2-for-3 in the opener of Saturday’s twinbill vs. NU and had a three-run double in the nightcap. Sophomore Alex Cuas tossed 4.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen and surrendered only one hit against NU on Saturday. Michael Adams allowed two earned runs in 7.0 innings vs. NU on Sunday and struck out five.
WILLIAM & MARY (15-13, 2-4 in CAA)
The Tribe dropped two-of-three at CAA foe Delaware to cap a 2-3 week. W&M topped UD 8-2 in Saturday’s opener behind a strong pitching effort from Nick Brown (3-2), who limited the Hens to one run on six hits over 7.0 innings. Charles Ameer was 2-for-4 with a double and a homer in the win, while Owen Socher was 2-for-4 and drove in two. Ameer batted .333 for the week. Nick Raquet gave up just one run over 7.1 innings and struck out a career-high 11 on Sunday, but didn’t get a decision as W&M fell 5-4 in 11 innings. He leads the CAA with a 2.12 ERA for the season and has 40 strikeouts in 34 innings. Ryan Hall was 3-for-3 during a 6-1 victory over Norfolk State last Tuesday and leads the Tribe in batting (.363), runs (32) and doubles (11) for the season.
