NEWARK, Del. – Northeastern shined on the final day of competition en route to winning the program’s third straight CAA Men’s Track and Field Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium from the University of Delaware.
The Huskies finished with 273 points, while William & Mary placed second with 247 points and UNCW was third with 115 points.
Tribe redshirt senior Taylor Frenia became the first male to win all three heavy throwing events at the title meet since 1992, winning the hammer on Friday, along with two more gold medals in the shot put and discus on Saturday. Frenia was tabbed Most Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet for his efforts. NU freshman David Adams turned in a second-place finish in the 110m hurdles (and a first-place showing in the 400m hurdles) and picked up Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet recognition.
Shot Put & Discus
Frenia won his second field event of the weekend and the third shot put title of his standout career. Frenia’s top throw of 59-9 (18.21m) beat-out teammate Preston Richardson and Ryan Kim of Northeastern, the champion in shot put last year.
In the discus, Frenia crushed the title meet record, registering an enormous performance of 192-7 (58.70m). In 2015, Frenia set the previous championship record with a toss of 170-6, for comparison. Former Tribe athlete Michael Howell was the last men to win all three heavy throw events at the 1992 title meet.
High Jump & Triple Jump
UNCW’s Moe Holmes successfully left the weekend with gold in all three jump events, winning both the high jump and triple on Saturday, along with his long jump title on Friday. Holmes won the high jump with a mark of 6-7.50 (2.02m) and the triple with a performance of 46-1.50 (14.06m).
1,500m
A back-and-forth affair down the stretch saw William & Mary redshirt junior David Barney earn a hard-fought victory in 3:46.09 – the fastest time at the championships in the event since 2008. Northeastern’s Paul Duffey (3:46.57) earned silver, winning silver for the second straight year.
Decathlon
Northeastern junior Nick Fofana won the decathlon title for the second straight year, securing first with 6,536 points. He already owns the conference record (6,691 points), set last season.
100 & 200m
Northeastern’s Naukym Morton won his first career CAA title in the 100m dash, crossing the line in 11.08. Teammates Collins Ebozue and Anthony Roderick finished second and third, respectively.
The Huskies again swept the top 3 spots in the 200m, with Kwame Fordwor (21.99), Ebozue, and Chris Jewett earning silver and bronze.
3,000m
The Tribe benefitted from a 1-2-3 sweep, with Cavender Salvadori (9:30.97), Riley Covert (9:33.46), and Ryan Onders (9:38.56) leading the pack for the majority of the race. Salvadori’s title marked the fifth straight in the event for the Green & Gold.
400 & 800m
NU’s Jewett turned around and grabbed gold in the 400m (47.91), obtaining the event title for the Huskies in the fourth straight season.
Connor Donovan, another Husky from Northeastern, claimed first place in the 800m (1:52.36). Last year’s event champion, Marc Rienas, finished second, while teammate Cameron Kunde followed in third place.
110 and 400m Hurdles
Matt Foster of UNCW finished first in the 110m hurdles, clocking a time of 14.58. He previously won the title in the event back in 2014 as a freshman.
Adams capped a big day for NU with gold in 52.55. He is the first Husky since 2011 to win the event at the championships.
5,000m
Tribe senior Trevor Sleight wrapped up the 5,000 with a first-place time of 14:45.42. Teammates AJ Tucker and Evan Woods followed for second and third, respectively.
4x100 & 4x400 Relays
Northeastern outlasted the Tribe and Seahawks in the first relay of the day (42.82), though W&M ended the final event of the meet with a win in 3:17.71.
