RICHMOND, Va. (September 11, 2017) – CAA Football has announced its weekly award winners for Week 2 of the 2017 season. Earning honors were Maine sophomore running back Josh Mack, Richmond junior defensive lineman Andrew Clyde, New Hampshire junior defensive end Jae'Wuan Horton, Elon freshman kicker Owen Johnson and Elon freshman quarterback Davis Cheek.
CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Josh Mack, So., RB, Maine (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon)
Mack rushed for a career-high 255 yards and three touchdowns on only 13 carries (19.6 ypc) as Maine rolled past Bryant, 60-12. He became the first Maine player since 2003 to eclipse the 200-yard mark in a game. Mack broke loose for scoring runs of 66, 13 and 60 yards and also had a 21-yard reception.
CAA Football Co-Defensive Player of the Week
Andrew Clyde, Jr., DL, Richmond (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park)
Clyde recorded a career-high 10 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and two pass breakups in Richmond’s 20-17 win at No. 25 Colgate. One of the junior’s deflections resulted in an interception and he helped force a three-and-out with a sack, a breakup and a TFL which set up UR’s game-winning drive.
CAA Football Co-Defensive Player of the Week
Jae’Wuan Horton, Jr., DE, New Hampshire (Stafford, Va./North Stafford)
Horton posted six tackles, a sack and two quarterback hurries as New Hampshire stunned FBS foe Georgia Southern, 22-12. One of the junior’s QB hurries resulted in a key fourth-quarter interception in the end zone. UNH limited GSU to just 326 total yards and one touchdown.
CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Owen Johnson, Fr., PK, Elon (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier)
Johnson kicked the first two field goals of his career, including a game-winning 36-yarder with five seconds remaining, in Elon’s 34-31 win at Furman. Johnson also booted a game-tying 23-yard field goal in the third quarter and was 4-for-4 on extra points.
CAA Football Rookie of the Week
Davis Cheek, Fr., QB, Elon (Matthews, N.C./Butler)
Cheek completed 26-of-35 passes for a career-high 301 yards and three touchdowns to lead Elon to a 34-31 victory at Furman. The freshman quarterback became the first Phoenix quarterback to throw for three TD’s in a game since 2014 and engineered a game-winning drive in the final minute.
