RICHMOND, Va. (September 4, 2017) – CAA Football has announced its weekly award winners for the opening week of the 2017 season. Earning honors were James Madison senior running back Cardon Johnson, James Madison senior linebacker Kyre Hawkins, Stony Brook sophomore wide receiver Andrew Trent and Towson redshirt freshman defensive lineman Bryce Carter.

Cardon Johnson, Sr., RB, James Madison (Newport News, Va./Warwick)

Johnson rushed for a career-high 265 yards and two touchdowns on just 17 carries (15.6 ypc) in James Madison’s 34-14 victory at East Carolina. In his first game back from an Achilles injury, the senior broke scoring runs of 85 and 80 yards as the Dukes beat an FBS foe for the second time in three years. Johnson’s rushing total was the second-highest in school history.

Kyre Hawkins, Sr., LB, James Madison (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar)

Hawkins recorded a team-best 13 tackles, including one for loss, in JMU’s 34-14 triumph at East Carolina. The senior linebacker headlined a Dukes’ defense that held the Pirates to just 362 total yards, forced four turnovers and limited ECU to one touchdown until a score in the final minute.
 
CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Andrew Trent, So., WR, Stony Brook (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport)

Trent blocked a punt that was recovered in the end zone for a touchdown in Stony Brook’s narrow 31-17 setback at 19th-ranked USF. The punt block, which was recovered for the score by Augie Contressa, gave the Seawolves a 7-0 first-quarter lead in a game that was tied (17-17) with 13 minutes to play.
 
CAA Football Rookie of the Week
Bryce Carter, Fr., DL, Towson (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire)

Carter recorded six solo tackles, including two for loss, in Towson’s 10-0 shutout victory over Morgan State. The freshman also forced a fumble on a quarterback sack and recovered it in the fourth quarter. Carter was part of a Tigers’ defense that posted its first season-opening shutout since 1983 and held MSU to 234 total yards.
