CONFERENCE NOTES:

CAA RACE REMAINS TIGHT:
The CAA men’s basketball standings remain tight as the conference schedule approches the halfway mark on Thursday. Northeastern and William & Mary share the league lead at 6-2, but there are seven teams bunched within two games of first place. Charleston and Hofstra are tied for third at 5-3, while Delaware, Elon and Towson have 4-4 marks. The CAA is one of only three conferences nationally to have seven teams separated by two games.

NORTHEASTERN SETS SHOOTING MARK: Northeastern shot a remarkable 71.4% from the floor in its 90-70 victory at William & Mary last Thursday. The field goal percentage is the 4th-best mark in CAA history and is the best by any conference team since 1986. NU also matched the highest percentage of any Division I team in the nation this season.

CAA GAMES MEAN CLOSE GAMES: Conference play has brought plenty of down-to-the-wire finishes. Nine of the league’s 10 teams have had at least one conference game go into overtime, with James Madison and UNCW each having three. Of the 40 CAA games played thus far, seven have gone to overtime and 11 others have been decided by six points or less.

THREE TEAMS IN TOP 87 OF RPI: Three CAA teams are ranked in the top 87 of the latest NCAA RPI through games of Jan. 21. William & Mary leads the way at #72, Northeastern follows at #78, and Hofstra is ranked #87. The CAA is one of only 11 conferences (American, ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, C-USA, Mountain West, Pac 12, SEC, West Coast) with three teams ranked in the top 87. The CAA is ranked 12th out of the nation’s 32 Division I conferences.

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE: Home teams are 25-15 (.625) in CAA play so far, but Charleston (5-0) is the only squad that is still unbeaten. Ten of the 15 road wins have been recorded by just three teams - William & Mary (4-0), Northeastern (3-1) and Hofstra (3-2). For the season, CAA teams are a combined 64-23 at home and also have 12 victories on neutral courts.

LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD: Offenses have taken center stage in conference play. Through the first 40 league games, the winning team has scored at least 80 points in 26 of them, including all five last Thursday. Eight squads are averaging 75.0 ppg or more in CAA action. Shooting percentages have been impressive as well. Eight teams are shooting better than 45% from the floor, six are hitting at least 36.5% from 3-point range, and five squads are shooting better than 76% from the free throw line in conference play.

YOUTH MOVEMENT: Young players are making a big impact in the CAA. There are six sophomores, one freshman and only two seniors among the CAA’s top 15 in scoring through games of Jan. 21. There are also just three seniors among the CAA’s top 10 in rebounding.

UNCW’S CACOK LEADS NATION IN REBOUNDING: UNCW junior Devontae Cacok leads the nation in rebounding (12.7 rpg) and Hofstra’s Rokas Gustys ranks 7th (11.5 rpg) through games of Jan. 21. Cacok has grabbed at least 10 rebounds in 15 of 20 games and is also 3rd in the nation with 14 double-doubles. Several other CAA players are among the nation’s top 20 statisically. W&M’s David Cohn ranks 16th in assists (6.3 apg). Drexel’s Austin Williams is 20th (2.7 bpg) in blocks. W&M’s Connor Burchfield is 1st in 3-point FG percentage (51.4%) while teammate Matt Milon is 6th (49.1%).

WRIGHT-FOREMAN EXTENDS SCORING STREAK: Hofstra junior Justin Wright-Foreman, who leads the CAA and ranks third in the nation in scoring with 25.1 ppg, extended his double-digit scoring streak to 42 games last week. The streak is the fifth-longest active streak in the nation. Wright-Foreman has scored 20 or more points 16 times this season and has topped the 30-point mark in five games. He’s the first player since Towson’s Gary Neal in 2007 to score 35 or more points in three CAA games.

W&M AMONG NATION’S BEST OFFENSIVE TEAMS: William & Mary can make a strong case as the top shooting team in the nation. The Tribe leads the nation in 3-point FG percentage (44.5%) and free throw percentage (80.9%), ranks 8th in field goal percentage (50.8%), 12th in 3-pointers per game (11.0) and is 17th in scoring (85.2 ppg).

HOFSTRA’S GUSTYS MOVES TO 2ND ON CAA’S CAREER REBOUNDS LIST: Hofstra senior Rokas Gustys has moved into 2nd place on the CAA’s career rebounds list.
