CAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WEEKLY REPORT - JANUARY 22

RICHMOND, Va. (January 22, 2018) – Elon University senior Malaya Johnson was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week while University of Delaware forward Lizzie Oleary and Elon guard Saadia Munford picked up CAA Rookie of the Week honors.

Center Malaya Johnson came alive in Elon's 2-0 weekend against Towson and Delaware. In two home games, Johnson notched 16 points in both contests while missing just four of 19 shots all weekend, hitting 15-of-19 to shoot .789 from the floor. The senior also had a big double-double against Delaware with 13 rebounds, polishing off a special day in which she became the 24th member of Elon's 1,000-career point club. She has now scored 16 points in each of Elon's last three games after not reaching double figures in any of Elon's first four CAA games.

Guard Saadia Munford helped Elon to a 2-0 week by averaging 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 assists last week. She was also a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. In the win over Towson, she posted a season-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go with four assists and three steals. In the win against Delaware, she went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, collected five rebounds and three steals and did not commit a turnover in 27 minutes of play. This is the second CAA Rookie of the Week honor for Munford.

Forward Lizzie Oleary helped Delaware to a split last week, averaging 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Oleary shot .615 (8-for-13) from the field in two games. In the win over UNCW, Oleary tallied six points and grabbed two rebounds. She led Delaware with a season-high 13 points for the Hens while tying a season-best with seven rebounds in loss at Elon.
 

#CAAHoops – The Week that Was
 
Charleston (5-14; 1-7): The Cougars had a pair of home losses to James Madison and Towson. The Cougars and the Tigers finished the season series with a split. Deja Ford averaged 14.5 points per game and went a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line.
 
Delaware (12-6; 5-2): The Blue Hens extended their winning streak to five games with a victory at UNCW before seeing the streak snap at Elon. Delaware and Elon finished the season series with a split. Junior Nicole Enabosi averaged a double-double last week with 17.0 points and 11.5 rebounds and scored her 1,000th career point on Friday night. Rookie Lizzie Oleary averaged 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 16.0 minutes and shot .615 from the field in two games.
 
Drexel (14-5; 6-1): The Dragons pushed their winning streak to four games with a pair of road victories at Northeastern and Hofstra. Drexel took the season series from Hofstra. Senior Kelsi Lidge averaged 15.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists, including a 21-point effort in the win over Northeastern. Lidge went 8-for-15 from the floor against the Huskies and also dished out five assists while grabbing nine rebounds.
 
Elon (12-6; 4-3): The Phoenix posed back-to-back league wins for the first time this season with a pair of home victories against Towson and Delaware. Elon and Delaware finished the season series with a split. Senior Malaya Johnson, who scored her 1,000th career point on Sunday, averaged 16.0 points per game while shooting an impressive .789 from the field for the week, connecting on 15 of the 19 shots she took. Rookie Saadia Munford averaged 10.5 points and 3.0 steals and went 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
 
Hofstra (10-9; 4-4): The Pride split games, knocking off William & Mary before falling to Drexel. Senior Aleana Leon averaged 15.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists for the week, including a game-high 19 points in the victory over William & Mary.
 
James Madison (11-7; 7-0): The Dukes remained undefeated in CAA play with a pair of road wins at Charleston and UNCW. Kayla Cooper-Williams averaged 12.5 rebounds and 8.0 points, including a season-high 16 boards at CofC. Cooper-Williams also blocked the 100th shot of her career against the Cougars and finished the week with seven blocks. Devon Merritt tied a season-high with 10 points in each game, shooting 61.5 percent, and turned the ball over just once.
 
UNCW (7-12; 0-8): The Seahawks had a pair of home losses, falling to James Madison and Delaware. Moriah Crisp averaged 9.0 points while Timber Tate averaged 8.5 points and 4.5 rebounds.
 
Northeastern (9-9; 4-3): The Huskies split home games, falling to Drexel before topping William & Mary. Junior Gabby Giacone averaged a double-double with 14.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game while classmate Jess Genco averaged 17.0 points, 5.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.
 
Towson (8-11; 3-5) The Tigers split games on the road, falling at Elon before downing Charleston. The Tigers and the Cougars finished the season series with a split. Three Tigers averaged double digits in scoring for the week, including Mary Cuevas who averaged 16.5 points and Raine Bankston who delivered 16.0 points per game.  
 
William & Mary (12-6; 3-4): The Tribe went 0-2 on the road with losses Hofstra and Northeastern. Bianca Boggs averaged 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds while Victoria Reynolds averaged 13.0 points and 5.0 rebounds.
