RICHMOND, Va.
- The first weekly Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) softball awards of the 2018 season were announced on Tuesday afternoon as College of Charleston senior Taylor DuPree, Hofstra sophomore Sarah Cornell and James Madison freshman Payton Buresch each were recognized after strong opening weekends.

DuPree helped the Cougars start their new season with a 3-1 record at the Stetson Leadoff Classic, recording nine hits in 15 at-bats for a .600 average. She became the eighth player in program history to reach 200 career hits and added a career-high four in CofC’s 5-4, 10-inning win over Akron to cap the weekend. DuPree also scored one run and had at least one hit in every game over the weekend along with four RBI and four stolen bases.

Cornell finished the opening weekend with a 2-1 mark in the circle and a 1.33 ERA as the Pride started the year 3-2 at the FIU Felsberg Invitational. The righty had a pair of shutout victories, with a career-best 14 strikeouts in a 4-0 win over ECU followed by 11 strikeouts over eight frames in Hofstra’s 2-0 win over FIU on Sunday. Cornell fanned 31 total batters and walked just four over 21.0 innings of work.

Buresch came through in her first career action for the Dukes, going 2-1 in the circle along with a solid 0.71 ERA. Madison went 3-2 at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge in Mexico, while the freshman was credited with 15 strikeouts, five runs allowed (two earned) over 19.2 innings. In her first career start on Friday, she went the distance in JMU’s 1-0 win over Louisiana Tech and struck out seven total batters.
