CAA BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Ryne Ogren, Elon
Jr., SS, Devon, Pa./Conestoga
Ogren batted .421 (8-19) with nine RBI’s in Elon’s five games last week. The junior shortstop had at least one hit in each contest and drove in multiple runs in three of them. His best outing came against Big 12 foe Kansas State when he was 3-for-4 with four RBI’s. Ogren has reached base safely in all eight game in 2018.
CAA BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Seamus Brazill, Hofstra
Jr., RHP, Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat
Brazill threw the first no-hitter in Hofstra history last Saturday as the Pride blanked Lamar, 1-0. The right-hander, who was making his first career start after 22 relief appearances in 2017, struck out five over 7.0 innings. It was the first complete-game shutout by a Hofstra pitcher since 2001.
CAA BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Nick Stewart, James Madison
Fr., RHP, Ashburn, Va./Rock Ridge
In his first collegiate start, Stewart allowed just two hits and one run over 5.0 innings to earn the win in JMU’s 6-2 triumph over UAlbany last Sunday. The freshman right-hander struck out five and walked only one to improve to 2-0 on the season.
DIAMOND NOTES:
Charleston (5-2) - The Cougars split four games last week, falling to Coastal Carolina before winning two-of-three from LIU Brooklyn. Jakob Frishmuth threw 6.0 shutout innings and struck out a career-high six batters in Sunday’s 7-0 victory over LIU. Nathan Ocker fanned five over the final three frames to earn the save. Offensively, Tommy Richter was 2-for-4 with two RBI on Sunday, while Luke Morgan was 3-for-5 with a double, two homers and three RBI’s in Saturday’s 11-4 triumph over the Blackbirds. Logan McRae leads CofC with a .417 batting average and five RBI’s for the season.
Delaware (2-4) - The Blue Hens were swept in a three-game series at Florida Atlantic last weekend. UD got a strong pitching effort from Kyle Hinton in Saturday’s 2-1 setback as he allowed just six hits and two runs over 6.0 innings and struck out four. Freshman Billy Sullivan gave up just four hits and didn’t allow an earned run over 4.2 innings in Sunday’s 6-3 loss. UD’s team ERA is 2.88 through six games. Offensively, Kyle Baker was 2-for-3 and scored two runs on Sunday. He leads the team with a .435 batting average for the season.
Elon (2-6) - The Phoenix were 2-3 last week with three one-run games and two others that went to extra innings. Elon’s first seven games were decided by eight runs and the Phoenix had four one-run games in the first five outings for the first time since 1934. Ryne Ogren had a big week offensively, batting .421 with nine RBI’s and he’s hitting a team-best .345 with 11 RBI’s for the year. Freshman Matt Oldham was 3-for-8 on the week with a game-tying 2-run double against Marshall. On the hill, Robbie Welhaf struck out a career-high 12 batters over 6.0 shutout innings of relief to pick up a win against Radford. Kyle Brnovich fanned 11 and gave up only one run over 7.2 innings in a victory over Marshall.
Hofstra (2-2) - The Pride went 2-2 on their season-opening trip to Lamar, dropping a doubleheader on Friday before sweeping a twinbill on Saturday. Seamus Brazill threw the first no-hitter in school history in the series finale, striking out five over 7.0 innings. In the first game on Saturday, the Pride didn’t give up an earned run over nine innings in a 3-2 win. Freshman Brad Camarda allowed just three hits in the first 5.0 frames.The Pride finished the series with a 1.36 ERA. Offensively, Vito Friscia batted .429 (6-14) and Parker Quinn hit .273 wtih a double and an RBI.
James Madison (5-2) - The Dukes fell at Liberty, but went 2-1 against Albany to open their home schedule. Daniel Goggin improved to 2-0 after giving up just three hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts over 6.0 innings in Saturday’s 4-3 victory over UA. On Sunday, freshman Nick Stewart followed by allowing two hits and one run over 5.0 frames in a 6-2 triumph. The Dukes have a 2.29 team ERA for the season. Catcher Zach Tondi batted .352 for the week with two homers and four RBI’s. Harry Brown tops JMU with a .318 batting average and has a team-high three homers.
UNCW (5-2) - The Seahawks went 3-1 last week, highlighted by a 5-4 victory at #6 North Carolina last Tuesday. Mason Berne had two doubles and a homer against the Tar Heels and is batting a team-best .333 with six RBI’s for the season. UNCW’s bullpen posted a 1.75 ERA last week and held opponents to a .176 average. Closer Clark Cota picked up his third save at UNC and hasn’t allowed a run in four appearances. Alex Royalty threw five hitless innings and earned his first victory over the year against Appalachian State last Friday. Austin Warren threw 3.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen in the finale vs. ASU to get his second win of the week. He also got the victory vs. the Tar Heels.
Northeastern (4-3) - The Huskies split a four-game series with SEC member Missouri last weekend. Charlie McConnell batted .412 (7-17) and stole three bases in the series. He had three RBI’s, including a game-winning two-run double in the 9th, in Saturday’s win over Mizzou and 3-for-4 in Sunday’s 4-2 triumph. McConnell is batting .467 for the year and has a hit in all seven games. Jake Farrell is also off to a hot start, hitting .464 with two homers and a team-best nine RBI’s. On the mound, Tyler Brown gave up five hits and one earned run over 6.0 innings and struck out a career-high seven on Saturday. Sean Mellen allowed one run and six hits in 7.0 innings on Sunday and is now 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 15 strikeouts for the season.
Towson (1-5) - The Tigers dropped all three games in a weekend series at Richmond. Junior shortstop Richie Palacios had another big week, batting .462 (6-13) with two doubles, a homer and three RBI’s. He had at least one hit and one RBI in all three contests, including a 3-for-5 effort with a double and two runs scored in the opener. Palacios leads Towson in batting (.440), runs (7), doubles (4), homers (3) and RBI’s (11) for the season. On the mound, David Marriggi turned in a solid start on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out four.
William & Mary (1-7) - The Tribe went 1-4 last week, picking up a 10-4 victory over Maryland last Wednesday. Ryan Hall was 2-for-4 with three RBI’s against the Terps and Hunter Smith was 3-for-5 and drove in two. Zach Pearson batted .333 and scored three runs last week, higlighted by a 3-for-4 outing against VCU. He’s hitting a team-best .345 for the season. Bodie Sheehan turned in another strong start on the mound last Friday, giving up two runs over 7.0 innings and striking out eight. He has a 1.93 ERA for the season and has fanned 12 in 14.0 innings.
