CAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WEEKLY REPORT - FEBRUARY 5

RICHMOND, Va. (February 5, 2018) – Northeastern University guard Jess Genco and Elon University center Malaya Johnson were named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Basketball Players of the Week while Drexel University guard Hannah Nihill picked up CAA Rookie of the Week honors for the second straight week and fourth time this season.

Junior Jess Genco averaged 16.0 points, 4.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 37.0 minutes during Northeastern's 2-0 week against UNCW and Delaware. She went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line for the week and extended her double-digit scoring streak to 19 games. Against UNCW, she posted 17 points, including five three-pointers and her 900th career point. In the win over Delaware, which secured the season sweep of the Hens, Genco had 15 points, dished out seven assists and grabbed three rebounds while not turning the ball over in 36 minutes of action.

Center Malaya Johnson powered Elon’s offensive presence in a 2-0 weekend against College of Charleston and James Madison. The senior averaged 15.0 points per game while shooting 54.2 percent (14-for-24) from the floor. Against CofC, she scored all 16 of her points in the paint, going 8-for-11, and helped Elon to a 54-20 advantage down low in the 22-point road victory. Johnson, also blocked two shots and grabbed two boards. Versus the Dukes, Johnson went to work down low again with 10 of her 14 points coming in the paint while helping Elon again dominated down low to the tune of a 30-12 advantage. Johnson has now scored in double figures in six of the last seven games after opening conference play with a combined 23 points in the first four games. This is the second honor for Johnson in the last three weeks.

Rookie Hannah Nihill averaged 10.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game to help Drexel to a 2-0 weekend and move into a tie for first place in the CAA standings. Against Towson on Friday, she matched a career high with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and added career highs of eight rebounds and six assists in the win. She followed that up with eight points and four assists with no turnovers at the College of Charleston on Sunday.
 

#CAAHoops – The Week that Was
 
Charleston (5-18; 1-11): The Cougars had a pair of home losses to Elon and Drexel. Tanisha Brown averaged 12.0 points and 8.0 rebounds for the week.
 
Delaware (13-8; 6-4): The Blue Hens fell to Northeastern, 73-59, in their lone game of the week. Sophomore Bailey Kargo guided UD with 18 points while junior Nicole Enabosi registered 10 points and seven rebounds.
 
Drexel (18-5; 10-1): The Dragons pushed their winning streak to eight games with a victory at home against Towson and a road win at Charleston. Drexel moved into a first-place tie with James Madison in the CAA standings and improved to 10-0 at home this season. Sophomore Bailey Greenberg averaged 15.0 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 60.0 percent from the field. Aubree Brown delivered the CAA’s third triple-double of the season and Drexel’s second-ever with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists.
 
Elon (15-7; 7-4): The Phoenix put together a 2-0 weekend with a win at Charleston and a big home win over James Madison. Elon improved to 10-0 at home and pushed its home winning streak to 14 games. Senior Shay Burnett averaged 10.5 points, 6.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds for the week, including 17 points, nine boards and eight assists against JMU. Senior Malaya Johnson averaged 15.0 points while Ra’Shika White averaged 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds.
 
Hofstra (10-12; 4-7): The Pride fell to UNCW, 59-55, in their only game of the week. Four Hofstra players scored in double figures, including Boogie Brozoski’s team-high 16 points and Mikiyah Croskey’s double-double (10pts, 10reb). Sophomore Marianne Kalin grabbed a game-high 12 caroms.
 
James Madison (14-8; 10-1): The Dukes split road games last weekend, downing William & Mary by 45 points, before falling at Elon for their first league loss of the season. Kamiah Smalls averaged 16.5 points and 5.0 rebounds while Kelly Koshuta averaged 14.0 points and 5.0 rebounds for the week.
 
UNCW (8-14; 1-10): The Seahawks split road games, falling at Northeastern before coming-from-behind to defeat Hofstra, for UNCW’s first league win of the season. Madison Raque averaged 11.5 points per game, including a 23-point effort against Hofstra, while Jenny DeGraaf averaged 11.0 points and 5.0 rebounds.
 
Northeastern (12-10; 7-4): The Huskies posted a pair of home wins, topping UNCW and Delaware. Northeastern took the series from the Blue Hens and moved into a tie for third place in the standings. Junior Jess Genco averaged 16.0 points and 4.0 assists while rookie Jasmin Watson averaged 5.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
 
Towson (8-14; 3-8) The Tigers had a pair of tough losses on the road at Drexel and at home to William & Mary. Nukiya Mayo averaged a double-double with 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while Raine Bankston averaged 11.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
 
William & Mary (15-7; 6-5): The Tribe split games, falling at home to James Madison before clipping Towson on the road. Junior Bianca Boggs averaged 17.5 points and 4.0 rebounds while senior Jenna Green averaged 17.0 points and 4.5 assists per game.
