PHILADELPHIA (March 7, 2018) – The 10th-seeded College of Charleston exploded for a season-high 88 points on its way to an 88-72 win against seventh-seed Hofstra in the opening round of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on the campus of Drexel University. With the win, the Cougars advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face second-seed James Madison on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
Junior
Darien Huff scored a career-high 22 points to lead four Cougars (7-23) in double figures in scoring. She also set a College of Charleston record with four three-pointers in a CAA tournament game. Huff, who made her first seven shots of the night, finished the game 8-for-9 from the floor, 4-for-4 from long range and handed out six assists. Her only missed shot came in the fourth quarter.
Tanisha Brown and
Deja Ford added double-doubles for the Cougars. Brown had 19 points, a game-high 15 rebounds and five assists. Ford scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and handed out six assists. It was her first-career double-double.
Cailin Dorsey chipped in with 12 points.
The Pride (11-19) had five players with 10 or more points.
E’Lexus Davis led the way with 16 points and six assists.
Mikiyah Croskey and
Olivia Askin each scored 15 points, while
Aleana Leon and
Marianne Kalin each finished with 11 points. Askin drained five of her seven three-point attempts.
Charleston had its highest scoring first half of the season, scoring 46 points. The Cougars, who shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening half, went on a 13-0 run late in the first half to take a commanding 19-point lead. Huff and Ford each scored 12 points in the half, while Brown added 10 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals for Charleston. The Pride shot a respectable 44 percent in the first half, but turned the ball over seven times, which led to 13 Cougar points.
Hofstra trailed by as many as 25 points in the game, but made a late run in the second half. The Pride cut the deficit to 11 points with 2:15 remaining in the game, but that was as close as it would get the rest of the way.
Charleston finished the game shooting 52 percent from the floor, its second-best percentage of the season. The Cougars were 8-for-16 from deep and missed just one of their 11 free throws.
