Elon Wins Fourth Straight Women’s CAA Cross Country Championship; Hassman Becomes First Individual Champion from Northeastern

NEWARK, Del. (Oct. 28, 2022) – Elon placed five runners in the top 11 to win its fourth consecutive CAA Women’s Cross Country Championship Friday morning at White Clay Creek State Park in Newark, Del. Abigail Hassman of Northeastern claimed the individual title becoming the first women’s runner in program history to complete the feat.
Elon tallied 30 points to win the team competition, while Northeastern finished runner-up with 49 points. Stony Brook was in third with 91 points followed by William & Mary in fourth, collecting 106 points and Delaware in fifth with 117 points, rounding out the top five. The next five consisted of Monmouth in sixth (150 points), Charleston in seventh (212), UNCW in eighth (250 points), Hofstra in ninth (251 points) and Towson in 10th (270 points). North Carolina A&T and Hampton rounded out the 12-team field.
The Phoenix was led by Madison Synowiec, finishing runner-up with a time of 21:16.4. Her teammates Leandra Lorenz (21:19.7) and Anna Twomey (21:24.1) followed, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Katie Blount also earned a top 10 finish for the Phoenix, crossing the line in 10th (21:54.7) just ahead of Jette Beermann (21:56.0) in 11th as all five Elon runners collected All-CAA honors.
Hassman earned Most Outstanding Performer honors from the meet, posting a winning time of 21:12.7 to become the first-ever individual champion for the Northeastern women. She was joined by three teammates collecting all-conference accolades, with Tessa McClain finishing sixth (21:47.9), Azza Borovicka-Swanson placing 12th (22:01.6), and Ava Duggan crossing in 13th (22:02.0).
Stony Brook had two student-athletes earn All-CAA honors in its inaugural CAA Women’s Cross Country Championship, including two top-ten finishes. Fiona McLoughlin placed fifth with a time of 21:41.5, and Grace Weigele came in seventh, crossing the line in 21:49.9.
William & Mary had consecutive top-10 finishers, led by Arianna DeBoer in eighth place (21:51.5), followed by Sofia Istnick in ninth (21:51.9) as the Tribe duo earned all-conference accolades.
Delaware had a pair of runners collect All-CAA honors, with Sarah Daniels (22:07.3) and Autumn Sands (22:07.9) finishing back-to-back in 14th and 15th.
