NEWARK, Del. (Nov. 3, 2022) – The 2022 CAA Field Hockey Championship presented by Primis begins tomorrow as four teams battle for the conference title and the league’s automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament. The championship will be held at Fred P. Rullo Stadium in Newark, Del., hosted by the University of Delaware, with the semifinals set for Friday, November 4 and the championship game on Sunday, November 6.

The tournament gets underway at 1 p.m. on Friday as top-seeded Monmouth makes its CAA Championship debut, facing fourth-seeded Drexel in the first semifinal match. Subsequently, second-second Delaware takes its home turf against third-seeded Northeastern at 4 p.m. in the second semifinal matchup.

The winners from Friday’s semifinals will advance to face each other at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 6 in the championship final.

Monmouth (10-7, 5-1 CAA) made a statement in its first season in the CAA, earning a share of the regular season title and the top seed in the conference tournament. Although newcomers to the CAA Championship, the Hawks have qualified for nine straight conference tournaments. Monmouth leads the CAA offensively in points per game (7.88), goals per game (2.59), and assists per game (2.76) while topping the conference defensively in saves per game (7.06) and save percentage (.805). Graduate forward Annick van Lange is the catalyst, with an NCAA-best 23 goals this season while she ranks second nationally with 50 points. Bente Steenhorst leads the CAA with 10 assists and is the only player with double-digit assists this fall. Defensively, Phileine Hazen has been stout in the cage, posing 1.71 goals against average while leading the conference in saves per game (6.65) and save percentage (.796).

Delaware (7-11, 5-1 CAA) is looking to continue its dominant run in CAA Field Hockey, attempting to win its fourth straight CAA title and ninth in the past 10 seasons. It was a rigid schedule for the Blue Hens per usual, with Delaware facing a league-high 10 nationally-ranked opponents this fall. The Blue Hens have had a balanced attack this season, with six players recording at least 10 points and 14 scoring at least one goal. Julia Duffhuis leads Delaware with 18 points and eight goals this season, ranking sixth in the conference in goals per game and eighth in points per contest. Berber Bakermans is second on the squad with 16 points, matching a team-high with eight assists, while Ashlyn Carr also tallied eight assists and has 12 points on the year. The duo is tied for fourth in the conference in assists per game this season.

Northeastern (5-13, 3-3 CAA) makes its second straight appearance at the CAA Championship and fifth in the past six seasons. The Huskies have advanced to the championship final on five occasions, but Northeastern is seeking its first CAA title in program history. Northeastern features a young roster, but it has been a combined effort from the Huskies' experienced contributors and youthful talent that has gotten the job done this season. Junior Mak Graves and freshman Emmy Stubbs each have 24 points and 11 goals to pace the Northeastern attack, which is the team in the conference with two double-digit goal scorers. The duo ranks second in the CAA in each respective category. Freshman Emilia Adragna is not far behind with 21 points and eight goals, while graduate transfer Jonna Kennedy has held down the goalkeeper position, ranking second in the CAA with 105 saves this season.

Drexel (11-7, 3-3) returns to the tournament field for the second time in the past three seasons after a one-year absence last year. The Dragons have the conference’s top winning percentage (.611), posting a league-best 8-4 record during non-conference play. Drexel is one of three teams to win the CAA title in the past decade and will attempt to conquer that feat again. The Dragons are second in the conference in scoring average (2.18) and scoring margin (+0.38), while they lead the league in defensive saves (12). Eline Di Leva leads the Drexel offense with 23 points and 10 goals this season, ranking fifth in the CAA in both statistical categories. Additionally, a pair of newcomers have made an instant impact for the Dragons as graduate transfer Taylor Mason has added 13 points on four goals and five assists, while freshman Anna Getty has made a league-high four defensive saves in her first collegiate season.
