– Second-seeded Delaware used a pair of three-goal quarters to defeat fourth-seeded Drexel 6-1 Sunday afternoon in the CAA Field Hockey Championship game. It marks the fourth straight CAA title for the Blue Hens and the ninth in the past decade during a dominant run for Delaware.

Delaware improves to 9-11 with the victory and earns the conference’s automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament. Drexel concludes the season 12-8 after the setback.

It was a balanced attack for the Blue Hens, who had six different goal-scorers and an eight-save performance from Lizzie Gaebel in the cage.

After a career day in the semifinals, Ashlyn Carr continued her stellar play with three points on one goal and one assist to lead Delaware and was named the CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Performer.

Delaware set the tone from the opening whistle as the Blue Hens were red-hot from the minute they stepped on the turf. Kiki Oudshoorn tallied the first goal of the match 33 seconds into the contest off a Berber Bakermans assist. It was the first of three goals in the opening period, as Noelle Sabbagh snuck one past the keeper off a rebound on a penalty corner in the 12th minute. Sixty seconds later, Julia Duffhuis converted another penalty corner to mount a 3-0 lead.

After a scoreless second quarter, the Blue Hens came out of the break firing on all cylinders as Delaware scored three goals in three minutes to begin the second half. With 75 seconds off the clock in the third, Carr recorded a goal off a Lia Becker assist, and 25 seconds later, Becker scored off an assist from Oudshoorn. In the 33rd minute, Grace Hoepfner converted a penalty corner, pushing the Delaware lead to 6-0.

Drexel got on the scoreboard in the 52nd minute as Natali Foster found the back of the cage after a pass from Taylor Mason.

For the Blue Hens, Carr was joined on the all-tournament team by Duffhuis, who recorded four points on one goal and two assists in the championship final. In addition, Oudshoorn and Grace Hoepfner, who each scored in the championship final, joined the duo.

Mason, who recorded her third assist of the tournament, represented Drexel on the all-tournament team along with Liz Chipman and Anna Getty.
