CAA Indoor Track & Field Weekly Awards – Dec. 6

RICHMOND, Va. (Dec. 5, 2022) –The CAA has announced its first-ever indoor track and field weekly award winners following the opening weekend of the 2022-23 Indoor Track and Field season. On the women’s side, Elon junior Piper Jons earned CAA Track Athlete of the Week honors, and William & Mary senior Keeley Suzenski collected CAA Field Athlete of the Week accolades. For the men, Hampton freshman Jaheim Stern was named CAA Track Athlete of the Week, and Monmouth redshirt junior Mujeeb Ali was tabbed CAA Field Athlete of the Week.
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Piper Jons, Elon
Junior | Sprints | Ijamsville, Md. / Urbana
Jons opened the season with a victory in the 400m at the Visit Winston-Salem College Kick-Off. She posted a time of 56.47 to outclass the field at the JDL Fast Track, running over a second faster than the second-place finisher at the competition. Her time was the fifth fastest time in the NCAA during the opening weekend of competition.
WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Keeley Suzenski, William & Mary
Senior | Throws | Fleetwood, Pa. / Berks Catholic
Suzenski set a meet record in the shot put at the Navy Invitational, recording a mark of 15.20m (49-10.5) to begin the year with a first-place finish. The mark ranks sixth in the NCAA following the first weekend of competition. In addition, the senior competed in the weight throw, finishing eighth with a mark of 15.77m (51-09).
MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Jaheim Stern, Hampton
Freshman | Sprints / Hurdles | Kingston, Jamaica / Jamaica College
Stern began his collegiate career with a victory in the 60m hurdles at the VMI Team Challenge, posting a finals time of 7.97. The time ranks 13th nationally after the opening weekend of competition as Sterns was one of 15 athletes to post a sub 8.00 mark in the event.
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Mujeeb Ali, Monmouth
Redshirt Junior | Throws | Elizabeth, N.J. / Elizabeth HS
Mujeeb earned a pair of top-three finishes in his season-opener at the Rutgers Holiday Classic. The redshirt junior placed second in the shot put with a mark of 16.52 (54-02.5) and third in the weight throw with a personal-best 17.37m (57-00). His effort in the shot put ranks 27th nationally, while his mark in the weight throw is 43rd following the first weekend of the season.
Women’s Notes
Delaware – The Blue Hens opened their season at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University.
Autumn Sands posted the third-best 5000m time in Delaware program history, running 17:00.16 in her season opener.
Elon – The Phoenix began its season at the Visit Winston-Salem College Kick-Off. Freshman Hannah Schonhoff earned a third-place finish in her first collegiate meet, clearing 1.69m (5-06.5) in the high jump, while
Meghan Wilcox was .01 off her school record in the 60m, opening the year with a time of 7.65 in the prelims.
Hampton – The Pirates got their season started at the VMI Team Challenge with a pair of school records falling.
Oluwatomilayo Akintunde won the shot put and set a new program record with a mark of 14.92m (48-11.5), while
Jordan Mozie posted a time of 1:33.33 to win the 600m and break the school record. Akintunde ranks 10th in the NCAA with her mark in the shot put.
Hofstra – The Pride began the year at the FastTrack Season Opener.
Jordyn McDonnell set a Hofstra program record in the 5000m, crossing the line in a time of 17:31.55.
Monmouth – The Hawks competed in the Rutgers Holiday Classic to begin the season. Yasmeen Tinsley won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.73 and was second in the 200m, nearly recording a personal best, with a time of 25.36.
Stony Brook – The Seawolves opened the season at the Rutgers Holiday Classic.
Danella Dawkins and
Alexandria Earle earned third-place finishes in the 60m hurdles (8.98) and high jump (1.65m), respectively.
Towson – The Tigers went to the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston to start the year. Beighley Ayers represented Towson, running 18:12.88 in the 5000m.
William & Mary – The Tribe opened the season at the Navy Invitational. Olesya Stikowski won the pole vault with a clearance of 3.75m (12-03.5).
Men’s Notes
Hampton – The Pirates opened their 2022-23 campaign at the VMI Team Challenge. Dugion Blackman won the 600m with a time of 1:17.67, and
Olakunle Akande earned a first-place finish in the 200m, posting a time of 21.91.
Hofstra – The Pride got its season started at the FastTrack Season Opener. Paul Markovina placed third in the mile, opening the year with a personal-best time of 4:17.09. Monmouth – The Hawks opened the season at the Rutgers Holiday Classic. Tennessee Tremain finished first in the 3000m, posting a personal-best time of 8:19.01. The time was the 15th fastest in the NCAA during the opening weekend of competition.
Northeastern – The Huskies ran at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University. Pierre Sylvain earned a four-place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:53.85. The time ranked eighth in the nation through the first weekend of the season.
Stony Brook – The Seawolves began the season at the Rutgers Holiday Classic.
Colin Ross won the 5000m at the event with a time of 14:54.27.
William & Mary – The Tribe started the year at the Navy Invitational. Daniel Layton broke the Tribe program record in the 60m hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.17. Additionally,
Samuel Pritchard opened the year with a personal best in the mile, running 4:13.04. The time ranks 10th in the NCAA after the first weekend of the season.
