The Weekend Preview: August 25, 2022

RICHMOND, Va. (Aug. 25, 2022) – Field hockey, volleyball, and men’s soccer play begins for 2022 in the Colonial Athletic Association this weekend, while women’s soccer’s second week of play features home openers including another top-10 matchup for the CAA.
Field Hockey
All seven CAA Field Hockey teams take the turf opening weekend, including five games against teams ranked in the top 25 of the NFHCA Preseason Poll. On Friday, Northeastern opens the year at 3 p.m., facing No. 22 Ohio State in a neutral site contest in Albany. William & Mary follows at 5 p.m., hosting No. 19 Old Dominion (FloLive) before Drexel travels to No. 4 Maryland at 6 p.m. (B1G+). The weekend wraps up on Sunday with a top-20 matchup as No. 17 Delaware entertains No. 12 Virginia (1 p.m., FloLive). Earlier in the day, newcomer Monmouth visits No. 15 UConn (12 p.m., FloLive) and the Hawks open their CAA tenure on Friday, hosting Fairfield (4 p.m.).
Towson opens its season with a pair of matches in North Carolina, opening the season at App State (6 p.m., Twitch) on Friday. Hofstra will have the longest wait for its first game, hitting the field on Saturday against Stonehill (1 p.m., FloLive). |
Weekend Schedule
Volleyball
Ten CAA Volleyball teams hit the court to open the 2022 season this weekend. Five teams begin the year at home, including Charleston, Hofstra and UNCW, hosting Power Five foes in their opening tournaments. The Seahawks face Virginia Tech at 6 p.m., and Hofstra hosts Miami at 7 p.m. on Friday, while the Cougars entertain Rutgers at 7 p.m. on Saturday, with all three matches available to stream on FloVolleyball. Stony Brook and North Carolina A&T will begin their CAA tenure with a pair of home matches before the Aggies cap the weekend visiting city rival UNCG (Saturday, 7 p.m.).
The five teams on the road include: Delaware in Philadelphia to partake in a tournament hosted by Temple, Elon heading to Richmond for the VCU Invitational, Northeastern traveling to the Chicago area to participate in Northwestern’s tournament, Towson at East Carolina for the Pirate Invitational and William & Mary shipping down to Tampa, participating in the USF Invite. |

Men’s Soccer
Four CAA teams are home as part of an eight-match opening day on Thursday. Northeastern kicks off the year by hosting UMass (1 p.m., FloFC), while a trio of 7 p.m. home games feature No. 17 Hofstra hosting Fordham, Delaware welcoming Mount St. Mary’s, and Monmouth earning a visit from St. John’s. William & Mary, Stony Brook, and UNCW will open the year on the road while Drexel plays the first of two neutral-site games in Harrisonburg. Elon and Charleston make their debuts Friday, as the Phoenix plays Milwaukee in Durham (5 p.m.) and the Cougars visit UAB (8 p.m., ESPN+).
A five-game Sunday starts with neutral-site contests for Elon, Drexel, and Charleston; William & Mary hosts Coastal Carolina (4 p.m., FloFC) and UNCW visits UNCG (7 p.m., ESPN+) in Sunday evening clashes.
Four teams will wrap up the opening weekend on Monday with Northeastern making a crosstown trip to Boston College (5 p.m., ACCNX) before three home games at 7 p.m. on FloFC: Saint Peter’s at Stony Brook, Loyola Maryland at Delaware, and Rhode Island at Hofstra. |

Women’s Soccer
Monmouth will be the lone team with two home contests on the weekend, including the marquee game of the weekend with a visit to New Jersey from No. 10 Penn State on Sunday (1 p.m., FloFC). Monmouth’s contest against Penn State will be joined by three other Power 5 clashes on the schedule, as Delaware visits Virginia Tech on Thursday (7 p.m., ACCNX) before Charleston makes a trip to Georgia (2 p.m., SECN+) and the Hokies head to Elon on Sunday (7 p.m., FloFC).
Sunday’s schedule includes a host of in-state battles, including LIU at Stony Brook (2 p.m., FloFC), UAlbany at Hofstra (3 p.m., FloFC), and Mount St. Mary’s at Towson (7 p.m., FloFC). |
