RICHMOND, Va. (Sept. 15, 2022) – The first weekend of Colonial Athletic Association conference volleyball competition and the third Saturday of men’s soccer play highlight this weekend around the CAA.
Volleyball
Conference play begins in CAA Volleyball with teams streaking into their first conference matchups, in addition to local rivalries becoming CAA rivalries. Four teams enter CAA matchups with winning streaks of at least three matches. Towson holds the nation’s longest active winning streak, beginning the year 10-0, while William & Mary is on its longest winning streak since 2012, having won five straight. Delaware and Hampton have won three straight matches, and the Pirates are off to their first 3-0 start since 2014. Hampton visits Towson for the program’s first two CAA matches this weekend as one streak will end. The Tribe looks to keep its winning ways going as they host UNCW, and Delaware attempts to stay hot, entertaining Northeastern over the weekend.
North Carolina A&T and Stony Brook will also play their first conference matches as CAA members, but the teams will match up against familiar foes. The Aggies will renew a local rivalry, playing host to Elon in a series dating back to 1978, despite the teams not playing since 2018. The Seawolves will entertain Hofstra on Long Island, meeting for the eighth consecutive season and 13th time in the series history. |
Weekend Schedule

Stony Brook will host William & Mary (12 p.m.) and Northeastern visits Hofstra (7 p.m.), while Monmouth heads to Charleston (1 p.m.) and Elon – off to a 4-1 start this fall with a clean sheet in all four victories – takes a trip to Newark to face Delaware (3 p.m.). |
Weekend Schedule

A challenging non-conference schedule continues for CAA Field Hockey teams, including four teams going head-to-head with nationally ranked opponents and in-state matchups at the forefront of this week’s slate. On Friday, there are three opportunities to knock off ranked opponents and two in-state rivalries, including a top-25 showdown amongst teams that have played every season for the past 58 years. No. 16 William & Mary visits No. 25 James Madison (6 p.m., ESPN+), maintaining a series that dates back to 1974 as the Tribe looks to add another ranked win to its resume. Delaware and Monmouth will play ranked opponents, facing No. 8 Princeton (4 p.m., ESPN+) and No. 14 Harvard (4 p.m., ESPN+), respectively, while Hofstra battles with LIU (3 p.m., FloLive) for Long Island bragging rights.

Weekend Schedule
Cross Country
It’s a busy weekend around CAA Cross Country with 10 teams in action, including North Carolina A&T opening its season at NC State for the Adidas XC Challenge. The Aggies will be joined in Raleigh by Elon and UNCW. William & Mary, Towson, Hampton, Hofstra and Delaware will also stay in-state on Friday. The Tribe and Pirates head to Newport News for the CNU XC Regional Preview, the Tigers visit Annapolis for the Navy Invitational, the Pride hosts Saint Peter’s for a dual meet, and the Blue Hens travel across town for the GBC Fall Classic. Meanwhile, Charleston will compete in the Firetower Project, hosted by App State. On Saturday, Monmouth rounds out the weekend, participating in the Jasper XC Invitational at Manhattan.
Women’s Soccer
Non-conference play in women’s soccer wraps up this weekend with a light schedule around the league. Two teams are off completely, while just four will play a two-game week prior to next Thursday’s CAA openers. One of the teams with a two-game week, Towson, erupted for seven goals Tuesday night with five by Preseason Player of the Year Nia Christopher – one shy of the conference record set in 1996.
The CAA looks to finish non-conference play strong, having entered the week ninth nationally among all conferences in win percentage this fall. Hofstra will host a pair of Ivy League opponents with Princeton visiting Thursday (7 p.m., FloFC) and Columbia coming to town on Sunday (1 p.m., FloFC). The Sunday afternoon slate also includes William & Mary’s match against an East Carolina side receiving votes in this week’s United Soccer Coaches poll (1 p.m., ESPN+). |
