CAA Cross Country Weekly Awards – Oct. 17

RICHMOND, Va. (Oct. 17, 2023) – The CAA has announced its sixth cross country weekly award winners of the 2023 season. Northeastern swept the honors as senior Abigail Hassman was named CAA Women’s Runner of the Week, and junior Benjamin Godish earned CAA Men’s Runner of the Week accolades.
WOMEN’S RUNNER OF THE WEEK
Abigail Hassman, Northeastern
Senior | Foxborough, Mass. / Foxborough HS
Hassman won the individual crown at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, breaking her own Northeastern program record and leading the Huskies to the team title. The senior from Foxborough posted a personal-best time of 20:39.1 to win the 6K race by eight seconds. Her victory positioned Northeastern to top the 36-team field, as the Huskies beat out four teams ranked ahead of them in the Northeast Region, including No. 25 Syracuse and
rvHarvard.
MEN’S RUNNER OF THE WEEK
Benjamin Godish, Northeastern
Junior | Highland Park, N.J. / Highland Park HS
Godish won the individual title at the IC4A/ECAC Championships behind a personal-best performance. The junior covered the 8K course in 23:55.7 to outpace the 317-participant field by five seconds. Godish helped Northeastern to a top-three team finish as the Huskies finished eight points behind the team champion while placing ahead of No. 6 Syracuse and No. 16 Harvard.

Team Notes
Charleston: The Cougars competed in the Upstate Invitational, where the women earned a fourth-place finish in the 32-team field. Rhian Purves was the top finisher for the Charleston women, running a PR of 17:54.2 (21st) in the 5K. Mitchel Drees paced the men in the 8K, notching a personal-best time of 25:33.6 (41st).
Delaware: The Blue Hens hosted the Delaware Invitational, earning a runner-up finish in their home invite. Molly Lashley set the pace for Delaware, running to a fourth-place finish in the 6K with a personal-best time of 22:40.5.
Elon: The Phoenix sent runners to the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisc, and the XC-23 Pre-Nationals meet in Charlottesville, Va. Jette Beermann paced the squad in Wisconsin, running to a personal-best in the 6K (21:04.4/101st), and Kate Buerger led the way in Virginia during her first collegiate 6K (21:58.0/48th).
Monmouth: The Hawks participated in the IC4A/ECAC Championships, with the women placing eighth of 36 and the men finishing 15th of 34. Emily Simko paced four Hawks in the top 50 of the women’s 6K, running 21:30.4 (22nd). Declan McDonnell ran to a top-10 finish in the men’s 8K, placing sixth in 24:07.4.
North Carolina A&T: The Aggies participated in the Upstate Invitational. Fajr Kelly paced the A&T women, running a PR in the 5K (18:43.1), and Kylan Willis earned a top-50 finish to lead the men (25:38.8/48th).
UNCW: The Seahawks concluded the regular season at the Pirate Invitational, hosted by East Carolina. Summer Herbertson paced UNCW for the fourth time in as many meets this fall, posting a personal-best time in the women’s 6K (22:36.8/19th). On the men’s side, Sam Bland led the Seahawks in the 8K (25:45.2/35th).
Northeastern: The Huskies competed at the IC4A/ECAC Championships as the women won the team title, their third straight victory this fall, and the men finished third. Ava Duggan (20:47.7/2nd) and Azza Borovicka-Swanson (20:53.1/5th) accompanied Hassman with top-five finishes in the 292-participant field. In addition, Patrick Mullen ran to a top-10 finish (24:08.1/8th), joining Godish on the men’s side.
Stony Brook: The Seawolves also competed at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, with the men winning the team title and the women finishing fourth. In the men’s 8K, Stony Brook placed four runners in the top 25, led by Evan Brennan (24:02.0/4th), to finish three points ahead of Boston University for the team crown. The Seawolves earned a pair of top-10 finishes in the women’s 6K, as Fiona McLoughlin placed eighth (20:58.0) and Grace Weigele was 10th (21:03.2).
William & Mary: The Tribe ran at the XC-23 Pre-Nationals Meet hosted by Virginia. Arianna DeBoer paced the women in the 6K, running a season-best time of 21:02.5 to finish eighth. On the men’s side, Patrick North ran a PR (24:45.7/17th) to lead the Tribe in the 8K.
