RICHMOND, Va. (October 17, 2023) – UNCW freshman William Carrico was chosen as the CAA Men’s Swimmer of the Week, while William & Mary sophomore Sophia Heilen was honored as the CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week after impressive performances last weekend.

Carrico won five of the six races he competed in to help lead UNCW team victories over Old Dominion (155-105) and William & Mary (176-85.5). The freshman’s five victories came in four different events. He placed first in the 200 IM (1:52.62) and the 500 free (4:37.47) against the Tribe and took the top spot in the 200 fly (1:56.65), 200 back (1:51.25) and 200 IM (1:53.20) versus the Monarchs. Carrico, who was also second in the 200 fly (1:53.77) at W&M, has six first-place efforts over the first three meets and his times in the 200 IM and 500 free are the fastest in the CAA this season.
 
CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Sophia Heilen, So., William & Mary (Haymarket, Va.)
Heilen recorded four first-place finishes, setting three individual and dual meet records and contributing a 200 medley relay pool and dual meet record to lead William & Mary past UNCW, 167-95, last Saturday. The 2023 CAA Rookie Swimmer of the Year posted a time of 2:00.79 in the 200 fly, which is the fastest in the CAA by over two seconds. Her time of 2:03.62 in the 200 IM is the best in the CAA by 3.24 seconds, and her 2:15.94 effort in the 200 breast is the league’s fastest by nearly three seconds. All three times are among the top 45 in the nation. Heilen was also part of W&M’s 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:42.26, which is the 27th-best time nationally.
