It marks the first time in league history the cross country championship will take place at Pole Green Park. The course, which will serve as host to the USATF Cross Country National Championships in January, consists of a 2K loop and is extremely spectator friendly.

The team fields expand one more this season as Campbell Camels men and women will participate in their inaugural CAA Cross Country Championships after becoming full league members over the summer.

In the women’s team championship, the question remains, can anyone challenge Elon? The Phoenix has won four straight CAA titles by at least 20 points, had four of the past five individual champions and produced 19 All-CAA performances during a dominant run. This fall, Elon returns five All-CAA finishers from 2022, including three runners who placed top five in the competition. Jette Beermann has the best 6K time (21:04.4) on the team this year, but Elon is loaded with plenty of talent, ranking seventh in the USTFCCCA Southeast Region.

Northeastern is positioned to be the biggest threat to the Phoenix as the Huskies have won three team titles in four meets this season, most recently claiming the IC4A/ECAC Championship crown. Northeastern is the highest-ranked CAA team in the USTFCCCA Regional Rankings, sitting third in the Northeast Region. The Huskies have finished runner-up in three consecutive seasons but return the reigning CAA individual champion, Abigail Hassman, who became the first Northeastern female to claim the crown last fall.

Among other contenders in the women’s 6K include Monmouth, Stony Brook and William & Mary. The Hawks are ranked 12th in the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region, and the Seawolves are 12th in the Northeast. Additionally, Stony Brook and W&M each have runners ranked top-five in the conference entering the competition. For the Seawolves, Grace Weigele ran the fastest 6K time in the CAA this season with a personal-best effort (20:35.2) at the Paul Short Run. Arianna DeBoer leads the Tribe, running a season-best (21:02.5) at the 23-XC Pre-Nationals Meet to rank fourth in the CAA.

On the men’s side, Stony Brook won the team title in its inaugural CAA Championship last season, and the Seawolves look poised to defend the title in 2023. The Seawolves are fourth in the USTFCCCA Northeast Region, the highest-ranked team in the CAA. Stony Brook is coming off a team title at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, its third victory this fall. The Seawolves return three All-CAA honorees from last season led by Evan Brennan and Carlos Santos, who rank second (24:02.0) and third (24:06.8) in the 8K among CAA runners this fall.

The top challenges to the Seawolves will be Northeastern and William & Mary. The Huskies enter ranked eighth in the USTFCCCA Northeast Region, and the Tribe is 15th in the Southeast Region. Northeastern finished runner-up last season, while W&M won its league-leading 28th CAA title in 2021. Benjamin Godish, who has the fastest 8K time (23:55.7) in the CAA this season, returns for the Northeastern, looking to be the third straight Husky to win the individual crown.

The top 15 finishers from each gender will earn All-CAA recognition, while the CAA Athlete, Coach and Rookie of the Year will be awarded following the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
