MECHANICSVILLE, Va. (Oct. 27, 2023)
– Elon won its fifth straight CAA Women’s Cross Country Championship, while Abigail Hassman of Northeastern repeated as the individual champion Friday morning at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Va.

The Phoenix placed four runners in the top 10 and seven in the top 20, accumulating 36 points to win the team competition. Elon is just the second team in CAA history to win five straight CAA Women’s Cross Country titles, joining William & Mary. The Tribe has completed the feat three times, most recently from 2012-16.

Stony Brook finished runner-up with 55 points, improving on a third-place finish in 2022, followed by Northeastern with 78 points. William & Mary (98 points) and Monmouth (112 points) rounded out the top five, with Charleston, Delaware, Hofstra, UNCW, Towson, Campbell, North Carolina A&T and Hampton finishing the team race.

Elon was paced by Jette Beerman, who finished third in 21:11.0, and Leandra Lorenz, finishing fourth with a time of 21:16.6. Katie Blount (21:21.3) and Maggie Springer (21:33.2) joined their teammates with top-10 finishes, placing seventh and 10th, respectively. Freshman Hattie Reynolds rounded out Elon’s top five, earning All-CAA honors with a 12th-place finish (21:44.5).

Stony Brook’s top four competitors ran to All-CAA finishes, with Grace Weigele and Fiona McLoughlin leading the Seawolves in the top five. Weigele was the runner-up with a time of 21:07.5, and McLoughlin was fifth, covering the course in 21:17.6. Grace Sisson (21:49.8) and Rebecca Clackett (21:50.4) also earned all-conference recognition, placing 14th and 15th, respectively.

Hassman made history last season, becoming the first Northeastern woman to win the individual crown at the CAA Championships. The senior doubled down in 2023, improving her time by nearly 10 seconds, winning her second consecutive title in 21:03.5 en route to Most Outstanding Performer honors. She was joined in the top 10 by her teammate Azza Borovicka-Swanson (21:21.3), who earned All-CAA accolades for the third straight season, finishing sixth.

William & Mary had a pair of top-10 finishers and three runners who earned All-CAA honors. Sofia Istnick (21:27.7) and Arianna DeBoer (21:31.5) crossed the line consecutively in eighth and ninth, while Catherin Garrison (21:39.9) ran to an 11th-place finish.

Monmouth was also represented on the All-CAA squad as freshman Emily Simko (21:44.5) garnered accolades with a 13th-place effort in her first CAA Championship.
