HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Nov. 19, 2023) –Ryan Carmichael netted both Hofstra goals and Eliot Goldthorp had a pair of assists as No. 14 Hofstra defeated Yale, 2-0, in the second round of the NCAA Championship at Hofstra Soccer Stadium Sunday night. The win sends the Pride to the third round for the second time in program history, where Hofstra will face the third-seeded Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina Sunday, November 26 at 5 p.m. in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Hofstra, which was seeded for the first time and had a first round bye, improved to 14-3-4 on the season and extended its winning streak to a season-best five games. Yale, which won a first round game at Bryant on Thursday, sees its season end at 11-6-3.

Carmichael put the Pride up 1-0 37 minutes in as he put in a cross from Goldthorp that was originally punched out by Yale keeper Chris Edwards. Carmichael gathered the ball and sent a shot to Edwards’ right for his 15th of the season. The senior forward, who is the nation’s leading active goal scorer with 45 career goals, completed the brace at 66:48 with a header on another brilliant cross from Goldthorp.

Hofstra keeper Wessel Speel stopped the only two shots on goal by the Bulldogs to notch his ninth shutout of the season. Edwards made two saves for the Bulldogs as well. Yale had one good scoring chance as TJ Presthus had a shot go off the bottom of the crossbar. The ball bounced straight down but did not cross the goal line before Speel was able to corral it.

Hofstra moved to 6-7 all-time in NCAA Championship play.
