CAA Swimming & Diving Weekly Awards - Nov. 21

RICHMOND, Va. (November 21, 2023) – Towson senior Brian Benzing received CAA Men’s Swimmer of the Week honors and William & Mary sophomore Sophia Heilen earned CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week accolades after both turned in record-setting performances last weekend. UNCW sophomore Ethan Badrian was named Men’s Diver of the Week and Northeastern junior Erin Murphy was chosen as the Women’s Diver of the Week after sweeping both boards in competitions last weekend.
CAA Men's Swimmer of the Week
Brian Benzing, Sr., Towson (Ellicott City, Md.)
Benzing continued his incredible season, winning four individual events and four relays at the Patriot Invitational while setting seven pool and eight meet records. The senior posted a time of 51.48 in the 100 breast, which is the 3
rd-fastest in the nation this season. He added victories in the 200 IM (1:43.66), which ranks 22
nd nationally, the 200 breast (1:54.64), which ranks 24
th nationally, and the 100 fly (46.21), which ranks 30
th nationally. Benzing was part of pool and meet records in the 400 free, 200 medley, 400 medley and 200 free relays, with the 200 free relay team breaking a school record with a time of 1:18.90.
CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Sophia Heilen, So., William & Mary (Haymarket, Va.)
Heilen broke her own CAA all-time record and a pair of William & Mary records while winning three individual events and two relays at the WVU Invitational. The sophomore topped her own CAA record in the 100 fly with a time of 52.70, which ranks 38
th nationally. She set a new Tribe record in the 200 IM (1:58.38) and her time of 1:59.01 in the 200 fly is the fastest in the CAA this season. Heilen was also part of W&M’s winning 400 medley (3:39.65) and 200 medley (1:40.67) relay teams.
CAA Men’s Diver of the Week
Ethan Badrian, So., UNCW (Silver Springs, Md.)
Badrian swept the 1 and 3-meter boards at the Patriot Invitational. He scored an NCAA B cut 315.65 points in winning the 1-meter and then turned around and fashioned a winning score of 363.30 points on the 3-meter for the win and another NCAA B cut.
CAA Women’s Diver of the Week
Erin Murphy, Jr., Northeastern (Duxbury, Mass.)
Murphy recorded victories in the 1 and 3-meter competitions to help Northeastern capture the Terrier Invitational for the first time since 2007. The junior posted a winning score of 272.10 on the 1-meter board and registered a score of 266.90 to take the spot on the 3-meter board.
